Quartz Needles

Quartz needles are fine, rigid probes made from fused quartz and used to access individual cells or precise locations in nervous tissue, supporting high-resolution neuroscience experiments. A pulled or sharpened quartz shaft forms a narrow tip that can penetrate cell membranes or tissue with limited disruption; when configured as a micropipette, its hollow interior also permits intracellular fluid exchange or microinjection. Connected to recording equipment, quartz needles can measure electrical activity, while other configurations enable targeted delivery or manipulation. These properties support intracellular electrophysiology, neuronal labeling, microinjection, and studies of cellular mechanisms underlying neural signaling.

Source: Paolone, G., et al. Personalized Needles for Microinjections in the Rodent Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates a rodent brain microneedle injection using a quartz microneedle with holes. The microneedle is attached to a syringe and micropump to control the delivery rate. The needle with the injection solution is inserted into the brain with the delivery speed set at low. Once positioned, the delivery speed is increased. The needle is withdrawn after a brief pause.

We describe here a protocol for microinjection in the rodent brain that uses quartz needles. These needles do not produce detectable tissue damage and ensure reliable delivery even in deep regions. Moreover, they can be adapted to research needs by personalized designs and can be re-used.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening situation in which excess air is introduced into the pleural space surrounding the lung, either through trauma to the chest cavity or as a spontaneous leak of air from the lung itself. Air trapped within the pleural space causes separation of the lung from the chest wall, disrupting normal breathing mechanisms. Pneumothorax may be small without...
