Rodent Brain Recording

Rodent brain recording is the measurement of neural activity in mice or rats to relate brain function to behavior, sensory processing, and disease. Researchers use implanted electrodes or optical sensors to detect electrical signals from individual neurons or larger populations while animals perform controlled tasks, often combining recordings with behavioral and physiological measurements. These experiments reveal how neural circuits encode movement, learning, memory, and decision-making, and can identify changes associated with neurological or psychiatric disorders. Rodent brain recording therefore provides an important bridge between cellular mechanisms and systems neuroscience, supporting the evaluation of disease models and potential therapeutic strategies.

We illustrate how to perform recording and electrical modulation of 4-aminopyridine-induced epileptiform activity in rodent brain slices using microelectrode arrays. A custom recording chamber maintains tissue viability throughout prolonged experimental sessions. Live electrode mapping and selection of stimulating pairs are performed by a custom graphical user interface.

This protocol describes a surgical set-up for a permanent epicranial electrode socket and an implanted chest electrode in rodents. By placing a second electrode into the socket, different types of transcranial electrical brain stimulation can be delivered to the motor system in alert animals through the intact skull.

Circadian rhythms in voluntary wheel-running activity in mammals are tightly coupled to the molecular oscillations of a master clock in the brain. As such, these daily rhythms in behavior can be used to study the influence of genetic, pharmacological, and environmental factors on the functioning of this circadian clock.
