Violet Light Stimulation

Violet light stimulation is the controlled use of short-wavelength visible light to activate or modulate light-sensitive neural systems, making it a useful tool for studying how the brain processes sensory signals. When violet photons are absorbed by retinal photopigments or engineered neuronal opsins, they initiate photochemical or ion-channel changes that alter membrane activity and downstream neural signaling. In neuroscience, this approach supports investigations of visual pathways, circuit connectivity, and activity-dependent behavior, while optogenetic applications can provide precise temporal control over selected neurons. Its ability to link light exposure with defined cellular responses also contributes to research on neural computation and light-based interventions.

Here, we describe how to identify the stage of the murine reproductive (proestrus, estrus, metestrus, or diestrus) by simple, non-invasive collection and cytological assessment of vaginal smear samples. We further describe how vaginal cytology reflects circulating hormonal levels underlying transition through the murine reproductive cycle.

The Wave Nature of Light

2020

The nature of light has been a subject of inquiry since antiquity. In the seventeenth century, Isaac Newton performed experiments with lenses and prisms and was able to demonstrate that white light consists of the individual colors of the rainbow combined together. Newton explained his optics findings in terms of a "corpuscular" view of light, in which light was composed of streams of extremely tiny particles traveling at high speeds according to Newton's laws of motion. Others in the...
