Deep Breathing Test

The Deep Breathing Test is a noninvasive autonomic function assessment that measures heart-rate variation during controlled breathing, helping evaluate parasympathetic, or vagal, cardiovascular regulation. During paced cycles of deep inspiration and expiration, respiratory sinus arrhythmia causes heart rate to rise with inhalation and fall with exhalation; the difference or resulting heart-rate variability provides an index of cardiac vagal activity. In pharmacology, the test can characterize how drugs influence autonomic control, assess treatment-related changes in cardiovascular reflexes, and support research on autonomic dysfunction. Results may also help distinguish altered parasympathetic responses from broader cardiovascular abnormalities when interpreted with other physiological measurements.

Here, we present a protocol to assess two deep breathing patterns of natural and diaphragmatic breathing for their effectiveness and ease of execution. Fifteen participants were selected, utilizing an electrocardiograph and expired gas analyzer for measurement of the ventilatory parameters, together with visual assessment by video capture of thoracoabdominal movement.

The process of breathing, inhaling and exhaling, involves the coordinated movement of the chest wall, the lungs, and the muscles that move them. Two muscle groups with important roles in breathing are the diaphragm, located directly below the lungs, and the intercostal muscles, which lie between the ribs. When the diaphragm contracts, it moves downward, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity and creating more room for the lungs to expand. When the intercostal muscles contract, the ribs...

Fast and Accurate Exhaled Breath Ammonia Measurement

Ammonia is an important physiologic metabolite relevant to various disease and wellness states. It is also a difficult molecule to measure in breath, which demands particular precautions be taken to obtain accurate results. Not all factors influencing ammonia are known, but progress can be difficult without accounting for these factors.
