Drug Specificity

Drug specificity is the extent to which a drug acts on a particular molecular target or biological pathway rather than producing effects throughout the body, making it central to understanding therapeutic benefits and adverse reactions. Specificity arises when a drug’s chemical structure binds a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other target with greater affinity than alternative sites, although its selectivity can change with concentration, distribution, and metabolism. In pharmacology, studying drug specificity connects molecular interactions to dose-response relationships, therapeutic index, and side effects. This knowledge guides drug design and treatment selection while supporting medicines that target disease mechanisms with fewer unintended effects.

2025

Begin with a harvested rat brain submerged in artificial cerebrospinal fluid in a petri dish.Deposit the magnetic millirobot onto the brain cortex. The millirobot, termed MANiAC, consists of magnetically aligned nickel nanorods embedded within a microcapsule composed of the biocompatible hydrogel alginate and loaded with a dye as a model drug.Position an external magnetic field generator beneath the petri dish to generate a uniform rotating magnetic field. The nickel nanorods align and rotate...

Clinically Relevant Drug Product Specifications: Methods of Establishment

2025

Product specifications define the acceptable quality of a pharmaceutical product by ensuring identity, purity, potency, and strength. These specifications serve as benchmarks during development, manufacturing, and post-approval quality control. Clinically relevant specifications are particularly important because they directly relate to a drug's safety and efficacy in clinical use.Dissolution studies are critical biopharmaceutic tools that link in vitro behavior to in vivo performance. They...

A Combined 3D Tissue Engineered In Vitro/In Silico Lung Tumor Model for Predicting Drug Effectiveness in Specific Mutational Backgrounds

2016

We present a three-dimensional (3D) lung cancer model based on a biological collagen scaffold to study sensitivity towards non-small-cell-lung-cancer-(NSCLC)-targeted therapies. We demonstrate different read-out techniques to determine the proliferation index, apoptosis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) status. Collected data are integrated into an in silico model for prediction of drug sensitivity.
