Bulk Stress

Bulk stress is the compressive or tensile stress applied uniformly across a material’s surface, and it is important for describing how matter responds to changes in pressure. Under nearly hydrostatic loading, forces act normal to the surface from all directions, producing a change in volume while causing little or no change in shape; the resulting response is quantified by the bulk modulus, K = −ΔP/(ΔV/V). In physics, bulk stress helps compare the compressibility of solids, liquids, and gases and predict deformation under pressure, with applications in fluid systems, materials testing, and high-pressure research.

Bulk Modulus

2025

The bulk modulus is a scientific term used to describe a material's resistance to uniform compression. It is the proportionality constant that links a change in pressure to the resulting relative volume change. This concept becomes clearer when an isotropic material element is visualized as a cube of unit volume. When this cube is subjected to normal stresses, it undergoes deformation, changing its shape into a rectangular parallelepiped with a different volume. The discrepancy between this...

Bulk Density of Aggregate

2024

Bulk density refers to the mass of aggregate particles that would fill a unit volume. The concept of bulk density originates from the inability to pack aggregate particles in a manner that completely eliminates void spaces. Hence, the term bulk refers to the volume that encompasses both the aggregates and the voids. This measurement is crucial when aggregates are batched by volume and is used to convert quantities by mass to volume. Most natural mineral aggregates, like sand and gravel,...

Quantifying Bulk Autophagic Sequestration Activity in Mammalian Cells

2025

The video demonstrates an assay for assessing bulk autophagic sequestration activity in mammalian cells. It utilizes electroporation to release cytosolic proteins, including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The sequestered LDH and total cellular LDH fractions are determined to assess LDH sequestration, providing insights into the overall bulk sequestration activity.
