Circuit Components

Circuit components are the individual elements that control, conduct, store, or transform electrical energy within an electrical circuit. They work together as current flows through connected paths: sources provide voltage, resistors limit current, capacitors store charge, inductors oppose changes in current, and switches open or close the circuit. By combining these functions, engineers can regulate signals, filter frequencies, convert energy, and perform logical operations. Understanding circuit components provides a foundation for analyzing voltage, current, resistance, and power in systems ranging from basic laboratory circuits to computers, communication devices, sensors, and renewable-energy technologies.

Characterization of Magnetic Components

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...

RC/RL/LC Circuits

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Capacitors (C), inductors (L), and resistors (R) are each an important circuit element with distinct behaviors. A resistor dissipates energy and obeys Ohm's law, with its voltage proportional to its current. A capacitor stores electrical energy, with its current proportional to the rate of change of its voltage, while an inductor stores magnetic energy, with its voltage...

Second-Order Circuits

2024

Integrating two fundamental energy storage elements in electrical circuits results in second-order circuits, encompassing RLC circuits and circuits with dual capacitors or inductors (RC and RL circuits). Second-order circuits are identified by second-order differential equations that link input and output signals. Input signals typically originate from voltage or current sources, with the output often representing voltage across the capacitor and/or current through the inductor. For example, in...

2008

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

Recapitulation of an Ion Channel IV Curve Using Frequency Components

Cited by 1 •

2011

There are technical obstacles to measuring current flux through multiple ion channels simultaneously, and later discerning what portion of the transmembrane current is due to each channel type. To address this need, this method presents a way to generate the IV curve of individual channel types using specific frequency components.
