Spark Ignition

Spark ignition is a combustion process in which an electrical spark initiates burning of a fuel-air mixture, typically within an engine cylinder. In a spark-ignition engine, a high-voltage discharge crosses a gap between electrodes, creating a hot plasma channel that forms a flame kernel; the flame then propagates through the compressed mixture and releases heat, raising pressure to drive a piston. Spark ignition is central to gasoline engines, where ignition timing, mixture composition, compression, and turbulence influence combustion speed, efficiency, power, and pollutant formation. Studying this process connects electric discharge, thermodynamics, fluid motion, and chemical energy conversion in applied physics.

Described here is a method to directly measure calcium sparks, the elementary units of Ca2+ release from sarcoplasmic reticulum in intact skeletal muscle fibers. This method utilizes osmotic-stress-mediated triggering of Ca2+ release from ryanodine receptor in isolated muscle fibers. The dynamics and homeostatic capacity of intracellular Ca2+ signaling can be employed to assess muscle function in health and disease.

Design Example: Automobile Ignition System

2024

The automobile's ignition system plays a vital role by ensuring the timely ignition of the fuel-air mixture in each cylinder. This ignition is facilitated by a spark plug, which is composed of two electrodes separated by an air gap. A spark forms across this air gap when a substantial voltage is generated between the electrodes, leading to the ignition of the fuel. One can generate a large voltage using a car battery of 12 volts with the help of inductors. Inductors are known for opposing rapid...

Washing, Drying, and Ignition of Precipitates

After filtration, the precipitate is washed to remove coprecipitated impurities and any remaining mother liquor. Colloidal precipitates, such as silver chloride, are washed with an electrolyte (such as dilute nitric acid) to prevent the peptization of the precipitate. In the case of slightly soluble precipitates, the wash solution contains a common ion to reduce solubility. Lead sulfate, which is slightly soluble in water, is washed with dilute sulfuric acid. Similarly, wash solutions may be...
