Velocity Mapped Imaging

Velocity mapped imaging is an experimental technique that converts the velocities of charged particles into spatial patterns on a detector, allowing researchers to measure momentum distributions and reaction dynamics. In a typical setup, electric fields from carefully arranged electrodes focus particles with the same velocity onto the same detector position, while particle production may follow processes such as photoionization or photodissociation. The resulting image reveals angular and speed distributions that can be analyzed to infer molecular structure, electronic states, and energy partitioning. In physics research, this method supports studies of chemical reactions, photochemistry, and ultrafast molecular dynamics, linking measured momentum patterns to the forces and pathways governing microscopic behavior.

2013

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping of a Human Brain Using Ex-Vivo Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Quantitative susceptibility mapping, or QSM, quantifies the magnetic susceptibility of brain tissue, which reflects its cellular composition, like myelin content.Begin by acquiring ex-vivo magnetic resonance imaging or MRI data of a fixed human brain hemisphere.Use 3D gradient magnetic fields to magnetize the tissue and collect signals at multiple time points or echoes to reduce background noise and artifacts and enhance the signals.Generate phase maps for all echoes, ensuring the removal of...

Motor Maps

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...

Fate Mapping

2023

Fate mapping is a technique used to understand how embryonic cells divide, differentiate, and migrate during development. In classic fate mapping experiments, cells in different areas of an embryo are labeled with a chemical dye and then tracked to determine which tissues or structures they form. Technological improvements now allow for individual cells to be marked and traced throughout embryonic development and adulthood. This video reviews the concepts behind fate mapping, and then details a...
