Strange Situation

The Strange Situation is a structured laboratory procedure used to assess infant attachment by observing how a child responds to separation from and reunion with a caregiver in the presence of an unfamiliar adult. During a sequence of brief episodes, the infant encounters a new room, a stranger, caregiver departures, and caregiver returns, allowing researchers to examine exploration, distress, proximity seeking, and responses to reunion. Developed by Mary Ainsworth and colleagues, the procedure helped distinguish patterns such as secure, avoidant, and resistant attachment, making it influential in developmental psychology and research on early relationships, caregiving, and social-emotional development.
