Question 1

What is a dichotomous key and how does it work for tree identification?

Accepted Answer

A dichotomous key is a tool that identifies items in nature by presenting paired phrases where only one correctly describes your specimen. The word dichotomous means to divide into two parts. By selecting the correct phrase at each step, you progress through the key until reaching the tree species identification. This method allows users unfamiliar with specimens to identify trees simply in field or laboratory settings.

Question 2

What leaf characteristics are used to identify trees in a dichotomous key?

Accepted Answer

Dichotomous keys examine multiple leaf features including shape, arrangement, margins, and whether leaves are simple or compound. Leaf shape categories include heart-shaped, triangular, lance, ovate, or obovate forms. Leaf arrangement patterns are opposite, alternate, or whorled. Margins may be smooth, toothed, or wavy. These characteristics relate to evolutionary history and environmental demands, making them reliable identification markers.

Question 3

How do broadleaf trees differ from evergreen trees?

Accepted Answer

Broadleaf trees have wide leaf blades that expose large areas for photosynthesis and are mostly deciduous, dropping leaves in autumn. Evergreens have needle or scale-like leaves with little surface area and thick waxy coatings to prevent water loss, allowing them to retain foliage year-round. Needle-like leaves make evergreens well-suited to areas where water conservation is important for survival.

Question 4

What is the difference between simple and compound leaves?

Accepted Answer

Simple leaves have one leaflet, a petiole or stalk, and a bud at the base of the petiole. Compound leaves have two or more leaflets with a bud at the base of the petiole. Once-pinnately compound leaves have leaflets arranged on each side of one main petiole, while twice-pinnately compound leaves have secondary petioles arranged along the main petiole. The presence or absence of a bud distinguishes leaves from leaflets.

Question 5

How do you conduct a field tree identification using a dichotomous key?

Accepted Answer

First, select a tree and collect one representative leaf sample, affixing it to herbarium paper. Record the leaf arrangement pattern on the sheet and measure the tree's diameter at breast height by taking circumference at 4.5 feet above ground. Note the surrounding land use type. Then use the dichotomous key to identify the leaf and record the tree species. This data informs decisions about tree survey point centered quarter sampling method and urban planning strategies.

Question 6

Why is tree identification important for environmental management?

Accepted Answer

Tree identification is an important first step in understanding the benefits specific trees provide in community environments. Using identification data and the National Tree Benefits Calculator, scientists and urban planners can inform decisions about building, infrastructure, or planting strategies to maximize health and environmental benefits while decreasing energy consumption. Identification also helps control pests like the Asian Longhorned Beetle by distinguishing invasive species from native beetles.

Question 7

What are lobed and unlobed leaves, and how do they differ?

Accepted Answer

Lobed leaves have projections that give the leaf distinctive shape, while unlobed leaves have a consistent, smooth edge. Lobed leaves can be pinnately lobed, where lobes attach to a central axis or vein, or palmately lobed, where lobes radiate from a single point. These characteristics help distinguish tree species in dichotomous keys and are often linked to environmental conditions and evolutionary adaptation.
