Scientific Method

Il metodo scientifico è un quadro di tecniche e domande che gli scienziati utilizzano per indagare i fenomeni con l'obiettivo di rendere le scoperte scientifiche semplici e riproducibili. È stato vagamente osservato dagli sperimentatori fin dal IV secolo a.C., ma il primo metodo scientifico adeguatamente formalizzato è stato coniato durante il Rinascimento europeo. Qui individui all'avanguardia della scienza come Francis Bacon, Galileo e Isaac Newton iniziarono a mettere in pratica le regole che oggi usiamo per condurre esperimenti. 
In genere, il primo passo del metodo scientifico è quello di formulare una domanda, di solito dopo l'osservazione di un fenomeno. Ad esempio, supponiamo che tu abbia allevato bruchi e abbia notato che alcuni impiegano più tempo di altri per arrivare alla pupa. E ti chiedi, i bruchi si sviluppano a ritmi diversi a seconda della temperatura? 
È qui che entra in gioco la seconda parte del metodo scientifico, l'ipotesi. Un'ipotesi è una spiegazione incerta del motivo per cui osserviamo ciò che osserviamo, e ce ne sono due tipi principali. La prima è l'ipotesi sperimentale o alternativa, e implica che ci sarà una relazione tra le variabili oggetto di indagine, la temperatura e lo sviluppo del bruco, in questo caso. Quindi, la nostra ipotesi sperimentale potrebbe essere che i bruchi impiegheranno più tempo per passare dall'uovo alla pupa se vengono allevati a temperature più fredde. Fondamentalmente, una buona ipotesi sarà verificabile. Per i nostri bruchi, possiamo cambiare la temperatura e registrare il tempo necessario per passare da uovo a pupa, e falsificabile. Quindi, se i bruchi impiegano all'incirca lo stesso tempo per svilupparsi, indipendentemente dalla temperatura, allora possiamo accettare che l'ipotesi fosse probabilmente falsa. Il secondo tipo di ipotesi è l'ipotesi nulla. Questo in genere ipotizza che non ci sarà alcun cambiamento o differenza significativa osservata durante l'esperimento. Nel nostro esempio del bruco, affermeremo che i bruchi si svilupperanno alla stessa velocità in ogni condizione di temperatura. 
Una volta che abbiamo le nostre ipotesi, la terza fase del metodo scientifico riguarda la sperimentazione e la raccolta dei dati. In un tipico esperimento, ci saranno due tipi di variabili. La variabile indipendente è qualcosa che viene manipolato direttamente dallo sperimentatore. Quindi, con i nostri bruchi, stiamo alterando la variabile indipendente quando cambiamo la temperatura. La variabile dipendente, nota anche come variabile di risposta, dovrebbe essere influenzata dallo stato della variabile indipendente. Quindi, quando esponiamo i nostri bruchi a temperature diverse, allora la risposta, la variabile dipendente, è la velocità con cui si sviluppano. 
Ci sono anche due tipi principali di dati che potrebbero essere raccolti per supportare o falsificare le ipotesi. Il primo sono i dati qualitativi, che in genere si riferiscono a osservazioni descrittive fatte con i sensi, la vista, il tatto, l'udito, l'olfatto o persino il gusto. Nel nostro esperimento, potremmo registrare che i bruchi sembrano muoversi e mangiare molto in condizioni di temperatura normale, rispetto a quella più fredda. A differenza dei dati qualitativi, i dati quantitativi possono essere misurati e scritti come numeri. Quindi, quando contiamo il numero di ore che impiegano il bruco dalla schiusa alla fine alla pupa, questo ci dà una cifra definita. Ove possibile, è quasi importante avere una condizione di controllo in qualsiasi esperimento in cui manipoliamo le variabili indipendenti. Nel nostro esperimento sui bruchi, possiamo far crescere i bruchi a una temperatura ambiente standard impostata di 21 gradi come controllo, perché questo dimostra cosa succede quando i bruchi si sviluppano in condizioni normali rispetto alle impostazioni sperimentali. 
Negli esperimenti osservazionali, un controllo potrebbe non essere necessario o addirittura possibile. Ad esempio, immaginate che i nostri bruchi siano farfalle adulte, che si nutrono di nettare in un giardino fiorito. Nella nostra ipotesi sperimentale, suggeriamo che preferiscano nutrirsi dai grandi fiori rosa, mentre la nostra ipotesi nulla suggerisce che non hanno preferenze e visiteranno i fiori a caso. In questo caso, la semplice osservazione e registrazione del numero di volte in cui le farfalle visitano ogni tipo di fiore fornirà dati sufficienti per confermare o rifiutare le nostre ipotesi senza bisogno di manipolazione di alcuna variabile o della necessità di un controllo. 
Una volta raccolti i dati, il passo successivo è capire cosa significa tutto questo. Gli scienziati confronteranno le previsioni delle loro due ipotesi per capire se possono rifiutare l'ipotesi nulla. Questo può essere fatto confrontando i valori della variabile dipendente nel controllo con le condizioni sperimentali. Se non sono uguali, l'ipotesi nulla può essere rifiutata. Se i dati raccolti supportano un'ipotesi, come i bruchi hanno impiegato molte più ore per passare dall'uovo alla pupa quando sono stati tenuti nel clima più fresco, allora questo dà all'ipotesi sperimentale più credibilità, ma criticamente non indica che l'ipotesi sia definitivamente vera, perché esperimenti futuri potrebbero rivelare nuove informazioni. 
La parte finale del metodo scientifico è quella in cui traiamo conclusioni e discutiamo il significato delle nostre scoperte. Qui, gli scienziati potrebbero fare riferimento ad altri esperimenti o ad altra letteratura per contestualizzare le loro scoperte e trovare spiegazioni sul perché i risultati hanno mostrato ciò che hanno fatto. Ad esempio, la conclusione potrebbe essere che ai bruchi piace crescere alle temperature più vicine al loro habitat naturale. Questo potrebbe, a sua volta, far sorgere nuove domande, come ad esempio altre specie si impupano a velocità diverse a temperature diverse? Questo potrebbe ispirare nuovi esperimenti, che possiamo testare usando, avete indovinato, il metodo scientifico.

Prima dell'indagine, uno scienziato deve definire la domanda da affrontare. Questo primo passo cruciale nel processo scientifico prevede l'osservazione di alcuni fenomeni naturali di interesse. Questa osservazione dovrebbe quindi portare a una serie di domande sul fenomeno. Questa fase richiede spesso una ricerca di base necessaria per comprendere l'argomento e il lavoro passato su idee simili. La revisione e la valutazione della ricerca precedente consente agli scienziati di affinare le loro domande per affrontare in modo più accurato le lacune nelle conoscenze scientifiche. La definizione di una domanda di ricerca e la comprensione di una ricerca precedente pertinente influenzeranno il modo in cui il metodo scientifico viene applicato, rendendolo un primo passo importante nel processo di ricerca.
Un esempio quotidiano: stai cercando di andare a scuola o al lavoro e la tua auto non si avvia. Il processo di pensiero che la maggior parte delle persone attraversa in quella situazione rispecchia chiaramente il metodo scientifico ufficiale (dopo che hai finito di arrabbiarti). Per prima cosa, fai un'osservazione: la mia macchina non si avvia! La domanda che segue: perché non funziona?
<h4>Passaggio 2: l'ipotesi</h4>
Il passo successivo è fare un'ipotesi, basata su conoscenze pregresse. Un'ipotesi è una "spiegazione incerta" o una congettura non dimostrata che cerca di spiegare alcuni fenomeni sulla base delle conoscenze ottenute durante l'esecuzione di esperimenti o osservazioni successive. In generale, gli scienziati sviluppano molteplici ipotesi per rispondere alle loro domande e testarle sistematicamente.
Tutte le ipotesi devono soddisfare determinati criteri affinché il processo scientifico funzioni. Innanzitutto, un'ipotesi deve essere verificabile e falsificabile. Questo aspetto dell'ipotesi è critico e di importanza molto maggiore rispetto alla correttezza dell'ipotesi. Un'ipotesi verificabile è quella che genera previsioni verificabili, affrontate attraverso osservazioni o esperimenti. Un'ipotesi falsificabile è quella che, attraverso l'osservazione di risultati contrastanti, può essere smentita. Ciò consente agli investigatori di acquisire maggiore fiducia nel tempo, non accumulando prove che dimostrano che un'ipotesi è corretta, ma piuttosto dimostrando che non si verificano situazioni che potrebbero stabilirne la falsità.
Le ipotesi si presentano in due forme: ipotesi nulle e ipotesi alternative. L'ipotesi nulla viene testata rispetto all'ipotesi alternativa e riflette che non ci sarà alcun cambiamento osservato nell'esperimento. L'ipotesi alternativa è generalmente quella descritta nei due paragrafi precedenti, indicata anche come ipotesi sperimentale. L'ipotesi alternativa è il risultato previsto dell'esperimento. Se l'ipotesi nulla viene respinta, allora questo costruisce l'evidenza per l'ipotesi alternativa.
Un esempio quotidiano: forse fuori fa freddo e quindi è abbastanza probabile che la batteria della tua auto sia scarica. Forse sai di essere stato a corto di benzina la sera prima e quindi è probabile che il serbatoio sia vuoto.
<h4>Passaggio 3: sperimentazione e raccolta dati</h4>
In entrambi i casi, il passo successivo è fare più osservazioni o condurre esperimenti che portino a conclusioni. Dopo la formulazione delle ipotesi, gli scienziati pianificano e conducono esperimenti per testare le loro ipotesi. Questi esperimenti forniscono dati che supportano o falsificano l'ipotesi. Se l'evidenza di un esperimento supporta un'ipotesi, ciò conferisce all'ipotesi più credibilità. Ciò non indica che l'ipotesi sia vera, poiché esperimenti futuri potrebbero rivelare nuove informazioni sull'ipotesi originale. La progettazione sperimentale è un altro passo fondamentale nel metodo scientifico e può avere un grande effetto sui risultati e sulle conclusioni che si traggono da un esperimento. Un'attenta riflessione e tempo dovrebbero essere dedicati alla progettazione sperimentale e alla riduzione al minimo dei possibili errori. L'esperimento dovrebbe essere progettato in modo che ogni variabile o fattore che potrebbe influenzare l'esito dell'esperimento sia sotto il controllo del ricercatore. Due tipi di variabili vengono utilizzati per descrivere le condizioni in un esperimento: la variabile indipendente e la variabile dipendente, o di risposta. La variabile indipendente è direttamente manipolata o controllata dallo scienziato ed è generalmente ciò che si prevede influenzerà la variabile dipendente. La variabile dipendente, o risposta, dipende quindi dal valore della variabile indipendente. Gli esperimenti sono generalmente progettati in modo che un fattore specifico venga manipolato nell'esperimento al fine di illuminare le relazioni di causa ed effetto.
Un esempio quotidiano: l'auto ha ancora tutte le sue parti? È questa la chiave giusta? Cosa dice l'indicatore del gas? Un avvio rapido aiuta?
Un altro aspetto importante nel disegno sperimentale è il ruolo del trattamento di controllo, che rappresenta una condizione di trattamento non manipolata. Il trattamento di controllo viene mantenuto nelle stesse condizioni del trattamento sperimentale, ma la manipolazione sperimentale non viene applicata al controllo. Ad esempio, se un ricercatore stesse testando gli effetti della salinità del suolo sulla crescita delle piante, il terreno nel trattamento di controllo non avrebbe sale aggiunto. Il controllo fornisce una linea di base di condizioni "normali" con cui confrontare i trattamenti sperimentali.
Il disegno sperimentale dovrebbe anche incorporare repliche di ciascun trattamento. La ripetibilità dei risultati sperimentali è una parte importante del metodo scientifico che garantisce la validità e l'accuratezza dei dati. È abbastanza difficile controllare tutti gli aspetti di un esperimento, quindi c'è una variazione intrinseca nei risultati che non può essere controllata nemmeno con gli esperimenti più attentamente progettati e controllati. Avere repliche consente a un ricercatore di stimare questa variazione intrinseca nei risultati. Anche la registrazione e la misurazione precise dei dati sono di grande importanza per garantire l'accuratezza dei risultati e le conclusioni che si traggono dai risultati.

Il passo successivo nel metodo scientifico consiste nel determinare il significato dei risultati dell'esperimento. Se esistono differenze significative, allora si può rifiutare l'ipotesi nulla e accettare l'ipotesi alternativa. Al contrario, lo sperimentatore potrebbe non riuscire a rifiutare l'ipotesi nulla, il che significa che il trattamento non ha alcun effetto sui risultati. Prima che gli scienziati possano fare qualsiasi affermazione sulla loro ipotesi nulla dai loro dati sperimentali o osservazioni, sono necessari test statistici per garantire la validità dei dati e un'ulteriore interpretazione dei dati. I test statistici consentono ai ricercatori di determinare se ci sono differenze reali tra i trattamenti di controllo e quelli sperimentali. Da lì, possono creare figure e tabelle per illustrare le loro scoperte.
<h4>Passaggio 5: conclusioni</h4>
L'ultima parte del metodo scientifico consiste nel fornire spiegazioni dei risultati e delle conclusioni che possono essere logicamente tratte dai risultati. In generale, questa fase del processo scientifico richiede anche di rivisitare la letteratura scientifica e confrontare i propri risultati con altri esperimenti o osservazioni su argomenti correlati. Ciò consente ai ricercatori di inserire il loro esperimento in un contesto più generale e di elaborare il significato di risultati particolari. Inoltre, consente loro di spiegare come il loro lavoro si inserisce in un contesto più ampio della loro disciplina.
Il processo scientifico non si ferma qui! Il processo scientifico funziona nel tempo man mano che le conoscenze su argomenti scientifici si accumulano e guidano la nostra comprensione di particolari meccanismi o processi che spiegano i fenomeni naturali. Se non riusciamo a rifiutare la nostra ipotesi nulla, allora diventa necessario rivisitare le fasi iniziali del metodo scientifico e cercare di riformulare le nostre domande e capire perché un risultato atteso non è stato raggiunto.
<h4>Applicazione del metodo scientifico</h4>
L'unica differenza tra l'uso di questo metodo nella vita di tutti i giorni e in laboratorio è che gli scienziati documentano attentamente il loro lavoro, dall'osservazione all'ipotesi all'esperimento, fino alle conclusioni e alla revisione tra pari. Inoltre, a differenza della risoluzione dei problemi al di fuori del laboratorio, il metodo scientifico in laboratorio include condizioni e variabili controllate.
Esaminiamo il metodo scientifico utilizzando un esempio tratto dal laboratorio. È noto che la crescita delle piante è influenzata da microbi, come batteri e funghi, che vivono nel loro terreno. È possibile capire quali microbi hanno quali effetti invasando le piante in un terreno completamente sterile, aggiungendo poi i microbi uno alla volta, o in diverse combinazioni e misurando la crescita della pianta. Ora inseriamo questo nei termini usati per descrivere il metodo scientifico:
Osservazione e domanda: Ci sono microbi nel terreno... questi influenzano la crescita delle piante?
Ipotesi:
Sperimentale: Un particolare microbo di interesse farà crescere le piante più lentamente.
Nullo: la presenza o l'assenza di microbi non avrà alcun effetto sulla crescita delle piante
Esperimento: allestire gruppi di piante in 1) terreno sterile, 2) terreno con l'aggiunta del microbo e 3) terreno naturale. Misura la crescita delle piante nel tempo, utilizzando un righello.
Conclusione: se le piante del gruppo 2 crescono più lentamente delle altre due, l'ipotesi è supportata. Questo deve essere supportato da analisi statistiche di molti impianti per essere considerato significativo. Un esperimento come questo non è legittimo con una sola pianta per gruppo.
Il gruppo 1 è un controllo che mostra che le piante possono crescere nel terreno sterile. Il gruppo 3 è un controllo che mostra che le piante possono crescere in condizioni normali. Il gruppo 2 è il gruppo sperimentale. Sarebbe possibile aggiungere diverse quantità di microbo, o microbi diversi, per introdurre più variabili. Il punto principale è che il ricercatore ha qualcosa con cui confrontare il gruppo sperimentale, il gruppo di controllo. Se l'esperimento includeva solo il gruppo 2 e il ricercatore determinava che le piante "sembravano malate", sarebbe una questione di opinione. L'unico modo per rendere scientifica questa osservazione è avere piante sane da misurare. Il tipo o la quantità di microbo utilizzata è la variabile indipendente, perché il ricercatore ha il controllo su di essa. La dimensione della pianta alla fine dell'esperimento è la variabile dipendente o di risposta perché è il risultato.
In definitiva, lavori come questo vengono pubblicati su riviste scientifiche in modo che altri ricercatori possano leggere i metodi utilizzati e le conclusioni tratte. Pubblicazioni come questa sono soggette a revisione paritaria, il che significa che un articolo non verrà pubblicato su una rivista fino a quando altri ricercatori non lo avranno verificato e concorderanno che è ben fatto. The scientific method gives scientists a way to solve problems and explain natural events. Its development grew alongside new ideas in science during the European Renaissance. Thinkers such as Francis Bacon, Galileo, and Isaac Newton helped formalize the process. Although the method has changed over time, much of its basic framework is still used today.

The process begins with observation and a clear question. A scientist first notices a natural phenomenon and then asks why it happens. This stage often includes background research. Reading earlier studies helps refine the question and identify gaps in scientific knowledge. In everyday life, this can look like noticing that a car will not start and asking why it is not working.

Next comes the hypothesis. A hypothesis is an unproven explanation based on prior knowledge. Scientists often develop more than one hypothesis and test them in a systematic way. A good hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable, which means it can produce predictions and can also be shown wrong. Hypotheses are often written as a null hypothesis, which predicts no change, and an alternative hypothesis, which predicts the expected outcome. If the null hypothesis is rejected, that supports the alternative hypothesis.

After that, scientists collect data through experiments or more observations. Experiments are designed to test the predictions made by a hypothesis. Data may be qualitative, based on the senses, or quantitative, based on measurements. Careful experimental design is important because it helps reduce error and control factors that could affect the outcome. The independent variable is the factor the scientist changes, and the dependent, or response, variable is the result that is measured.

Controls and replicates are also essential. A control treatment is a condition that is not manipulated, but it is kept under the same conditions as the experimental treatment. It provides a baseline for comparison. Replicates, or repeated trials, help scientists estimate natural variation in the data and check that results can be repeated. Precise recording and measurement make the results more reliable.

Scientists then analyze the results to see what the data mean. They compare the null hypothesis with the alternative hypothesis and use statistical tests before making claims. Statistics help show whether differences between control and experimental treatments are real. Results are often displayed in figures and tables so they can be reviewed and understood more easily.

The final step is drawing conclusions. Scientists explain what the results mean and compare them with earlier research on related topics. This places the work in a wider scientific context and shows how it fits into the field. The scientific process does not end there. If the null hypothesis is not rejected, scientists return to the earlier steps and revise the question or hypothesis.

In lab work, the scientific method is carefully documented from start to finish. It also includes controlled conditions and variables. A plant-microbe experiment shows how this works. Researchers can grow plants in sterile soil, add one microbe at a time, or use natural soil, then measure plant growth with a ruler. In this example, the question is whether microbes affect plant growth. The experimental hypothesis is that one microbe will slow growth, and the null hypothesis is that microbes will have no effect.

The setup includes a control group and an experimental group. One group shows that plants can grow in sterile soil, and another shows that plants can grow in natural soil. The group with the added microbe is the experimental group. The type or amount of microbe is the independent variable, and plant size at the end is the dependent variable. A claim based on only one plant per group would not be valid. The results must be supported by statistical analysis from many plants.

Work like this is published in scientific journals so other researchers can read the methods and conclusions. These publications are checked through peer review before they are accepted. Over time, patterns from many experiments help scientists build broader ideas about how nature works. This is how scientific theory develops. In science, theory means a concept supported by a strong body of evidence, not a guess.
