Transpiration

Le piante si trovano in quasi tutti gli ecosistemi del mondo, dai deserti, alle foreste temperate e fino al fondo del mare. Come conseguenza della selezione naturale, le piante hanno sviluppato una straordinaria diversità di adattamenti per affrontare le diverse sfide ambientali. Una delle sfide principali che le piante devono affrontare è mantenere una corretta idratazione. L'acqua è una risorsa fondamentale da cui dipendono per la fotosintesi, il supporto strutturale e il trasporto di nutrienti e altre molecole importanti. Un modo in cui le piante possono controllare il loro bilancio idrico è regolare un processo noto come traspirazione, che è essenzialmente l'evaporazione dell'acqua dalle parti aeree di una pianta. Questa perdita di acqua si verifica principalmente dai pori delle foglie chiamati stomi. Ma come arriva l'acqua qui? 

Per rispondere a questa domanda, guardiamo più da vicino nel sottosuolo. Qui l'acqua entra nelle radici delle piante per osmosi, quindi si sposta fino alle foglie attraverso un tessuto vascolare chiamato xilema. Questo canale d'acqua è noto come flusso di traspirazione. Poiché le molecole d'acqua si attaccano l'una all'altra e alle pareti xilematiche, quando evapora dagli stomi, l'acqua dal basso nel flusso di traspirazione viene tirata verso l'alto per prendere il suo posto... con conseguente flusso verso l'alto dalle radici. Ora diamo un'occhiata più da vicino a una stomia. Ogni poro stomatico è delimitato da due celle di guardia che possono espandersi per aprire il poro e contrarsi per chiuderlo. Le piante aprono i loro stomi per assorbire l'anidride carbonica per la fotosintesi e per rilasciare ossigeno gassoso. La perdita di acqua attraverso la traspirazione è un effetto collaterale inevitabile di questo processo. 

Questo compromesso rappresenta una sfida particolare per le piante che vivono in ambienti aridi e quindi hanno sviluppato strategie per ridurre il più possibile la perdita d'acqua. Un modo per farlo è far crescere foglie con piccole superfici, presentando una piccola area su cui può verificarsi la traspirazione. Questo è il motivo per cui le foglie delle piante del deserto come il creosoto sono relativamente piccole. Ma facendo un ulteriore passo avanti, le piante provenienti da ambienti aridi hanno anche meno stomi per unità di superficie sulle foglie, consentendo loro di ridurre al minimo la perdita d'acqua attraverso la traspirazione. 

Al contrario, le piante che abitano ambienti con acqua abbondante come le foreste pluviali possono permettersi di perdere molta acqua attraverso la traspirazione. Piante come questo taro, ad esempio, sviluppano spesso foglie con ampie superfici che aumentano la loro capacità di intercettare la luce per alimentare la fotosintesi. Queste piante hanno anche un'alta densità di stomi rispetto alle piante provenienti da habitat aridi, consentendo loro di mantenere alti tassi di fotosintesi e di sostenere foglie e steli di grandi dimensioni. 

In questo laboratorio misurerai i tassi di traspirazione ed esaminerai la frequenza degli stomi fogliari in diverse specie vegetali per rivelare come le piante provenienti da habitat diversi risolvono il problema della regolazione della traspirazione.

<h4>Sfondo</h4>

Tutti gli organismi viventi devono svolgere una serie di funzioni di base per mantenersi. Uno di questi processi prevede il trasporto di materiali in tutto l'organismo. Pertanto, gli organismi hanno bisogno di scambiare materiali con l'ambiente, che può essere visto su piccola scala di cellule che trasportano proteine e altri materiali tra loro o su una scala più ampia come il ciclo dell'acqua, dove l'acqua si muove continuamente sopra, sopra e sotto la superficie della Terra. In entrambi gli esempi, il movimento dei materiali da un'area all'altra è un processo dinamico regolato da variabili sia ambientali che biologiche.

<h4>Traspirazione: un driver per il trasporto acqueo</h4>

Le piante vascolari, dalle felci più piccole alle sequoie giganti della California, trasportano l'acqua e i materiali idrosolubili in tutta la pianta attraverso un sistema di fasci di tessuti vascolari che vanno dalle radici alle punte della pianta. In particolare, l'acqua e le sostanze nutritive vengono assorbite dai peli delle radici e trasferite per osmosi nello xilema della pianta, uno dei due grandi sistemi vascolari presenti nelle piante. L'acqua viene quindi trasportata nel punto più alto della pianta e verso l'esterno nelle foglie dove avviene la fotosintesi. È interessante notare che solo l'1% dell'acqua assorbita dalle piante viene utilizzata per la fotosintesi. L'altro 99% dell'acqua non viene utilizzato direttamente dalla pianta e viene perso dalla pianta a causa dell'evaporazione o della guttazione, nota anche come traspirazione. L'evaporazione è il movimento dell'acqua verso l'aria, dove la guttazione si riferisce specificamente alla secrezione di goccioline d'acqua dai pori delle piante. Entrambi i processi combinati costituiscono la traspirazione nelle piante.

Le foglie delle piante svolgono un ruolo importante nel rilascio dei sottoprodotti della fotosintesi attraverso i loro stomi, che sono aperture che permettono lo scambio di materiali tra la pianta e l'atmosfera. Gli stomi sono delimitati da celle di guardia, che regolano quando gli stomi si aprono e si chiudono. Questo è il sito attivo in cui la maggior parte dell'acqua viene persa a causa dell'evaporazione, nonché il sito in cui i gas vengono scambiati con l'atmosfera. Anche se a prima vista potrebbe sembrare una cattiva strategia per un impianto perdere acqua a causa dell'evaporazione, è inevitabile per mantenere il trasporto di materiali e acqua nell'impianto massimizzando l'input di gas. La traspirazione crea una minore concentrazione di acqua, quindi un minore potenziale osmotico nella foglia. Queste differenze nella concentrazione dell'acqua sono responsabili del movimento dell'acqua nelle foglie della pianta e anche del rilascio di acqua nell'atmosfera.

Il potenziale idrico guida l'assorbimento dell'acqua dai peli delle radici e anche nel trasporto dell'acqua alle punte delle foglie. Il potenziale idrico è la misura dell'energia libera dell'acqua, in cui le molecole d'acqua si spostano da aree con potenziale idrico più elevato ad aree con potenziale idrico inferiore. Quando l'evaporazione è elevata nelle foglie, si creano aree con un potenziale idrico inferiore o aree con meno acqua, quindi l'acqua dalle radici e dal fusto viene convogliata verso le foglie. Le proprietà di coesione e adesione delle molecole d'acqua consentono questo movimento dell'acqua. La coesione è l'attrazione delle molecole d'acqua l'una verso l'altra e l'adesione è l'attrazione delle molecole d'acqua verso altri materiali, come le pareti dello xilema. Quando le molecole d'acqua escono attraverso gli stomi, tirano le molecole d'acqua al di sotto, provocando il movimento dell'acqua verso un potenziale idrico inferiore.

<h4>Fattori ambientali</h4>

Le specie vegetali differiscono ampiamente nelle loro caratteristiche fisiche, nonché nella loro morfologia e funzioni nell'ecosistema. Queste differenze tra le specie vegetali e anche le somiglianze tra specie vegetali lontanamente imparentate sono modellate nel tempo attraverso l'evoluzione e più specificamente dalla selezione imposta da erbivori, impollinatori e altri fattori climatici e ambientali. Pertanto, le differenze nei tassi di traspirazione sono influenzate sia dall'ambiente che dalla specie vegetale stessa. Il principale fattore ambientale che determina il tasso di traspirazione è la temperatura. Temperature più elevate aumentano il tasso di traspirazione perché l'acqua viene persa attraverso l'evaporazione più rapidamente. Le piante che vivono in ambienti caldi tendono a perdere più acqua rispetto alle piante situate in climi più freddi. Anche fattori come la disponibilità di acqua, il vento, la luce solare e altri contribuiscono a influenzare il tasso di traspirazione nelle piante.

Le piante che vivono in ambienti caldi e aridi hanno adattamenti specifici che le aiutano a controllare la perdita d'acqua, come la capacità di immagazzinare o conservare l'acqua. Un gruppo di piante in questi ambienti, note anche come metabolismo acido delle Crassulacee o piante CAM, hanno sviluppato strategie, come aprire i loro stomi per lo scambio di gas solo di notte al fine di ridurre la perdita d'acqua1. Alcune altre caratteristiche delle piante specifiche degli ambienti aridi includono una superficie fogliare ridotta, un minor numero di stomi o la presenza di peli sulle foglie per conservare l'acqua. Tuttavia, c'è un compromesso con la limitazione della perdita d'acqua e l'avere un tasso ottimale di traspirazione necessario per la fotosintesi. Il tasso di fotosintesi si riferisce al tasso di crescita e di acquisizione di energia di una pianta, che è correlato al tasso di assunzione e perdita di acqua, quindi è estremamente importante che le piante siano in grado di bilanciare questo compromesso. D'altra parte, in ambienti in cui l'acqua non è una risorsa limitante, come le foreste pluviali tropicali, le piante affrontano diverse pressioni selettive che determinano differenze nei tassi di traspirazione. In questi ambienti, la selezione naturale può invece favorire le specie vegetali che possono trasportare l'acqua più rapidamente per superare le loro vicine concorrenti o crescere abbastanza in altezza da evitare di essere mangiate dagli erbivori.

<h4>Valutazione dei tassi di traspirazione</h4>

I tassi di traspirazione possono essere valutati indirettamente utilizzando un potometro, che è un dispositivo che misura il tasso di assorbimento d'acqua di una pianta a foglia. Il presupposto della misurazione del potometro è che la traspirazione causerà l'assorbimento dell'acqua, la cui quantità può essere quantificata. Inoltre, gli scienziati possono determinare i tassi di traspirazione relativi delle piante osservando le strutture fogliari, come le dimensioni e il numero di stomi per unità di superficie.

L'esame dei tassi di traspirazione delle piante può insegnarci non solo come le piante si adattano ai diversi ambienti, ma può anche fornire informazioni su come coltivare al meglio le colture in diverse condizioni ambientali per aumentare la produzione alimentare e regolare il nostro uso delle piante per adattarsi ai cambiamenti climatici globali e alla crescita della popolazione. Ad esempio, i tassi di traspirazione sono alterati dal riscaldamento globale e da altre cause e possono influenzare il ciclo globale dell'acqua, che a sua volta può influenzare gli ecosistemi e le popolazioni umane2. Pertanto, la comprensione di questi cambiamenti sarebbe necessaria per sviluppare strategie per rimediare ai loro effetti negativi. Inoltre, lo studio dei tassi di traspirazione di diverse colture può aiutare a identificare le colture con un'elevata efficienza nell'uso dell'acqua per aumentare la produzione di cibo per unità di acqua e ridurre la necessità di irrigazione3.

Water movement in plants depends on transpiration and the vascular system. Plants must move water and dissolved nutrients from the roots to the leaves. They also exchange materials with the environment as part of normal life processes.

Vascular plants use bundles of tissues that run from the roots to the tips of the plant. Root hairs absorb water and nutrients, and osmosis moves water into the xylem, the main water-conducting tissue. Water then travels to the tallest parts of the plant and into the leaves, where photosynthesis takes place. Only about 1% of the water taken up is used for photosynthesis, while the rest is lost from the plant.

That water loss happens through evaporation and guttation, and together these processes are called transpiration. Evaporation moves water into the air. Guttation is the release of water droplets from plant pores. Most water is lost from leaves through stomata, which are openings that also allow gas exchange with the atmosphere.

Stomata are bordered by guard cells, which control when the openings open and close. This makes the leaf the main site for both water loss and gas exchange. Although water loss may seem harmful, it helps keep water moving through the plant while still allowing carbon dioxide and oxygen to move in and out.

Transpiration creates a lower water concentration in the leaf, which lowers osmotic potential there. Water potential is the free energy of water, and water moves from areas of higher water potential to areas of lower water potential. As evaporation increases in the leaf, water is pulled upward from the roots and stem toward the leaves.

Cohesion and adhesion help make this movement possible. Cohesion is the attraction between water molecules, and adhesion is the attraction between water and other materials, such as xylem walls. When water molecules leave through the stomata, they pull more water molecules behind them, which keeps the flow moving toward the areas of lower water potential.

Transpiration rate changes with both the plant and the environment. Temperature is the main environmental factor, and higher temperatures usually increase transpiration because evaporation happens faster. Water availability, wind, sunlight, and other conditions also affect how quickly water is lost.

Plants in hot, dry environments often have adaptations that reduce water loss. Some CAM plants, or Crassulacean acid metabolism plants, open their stomata at night to limit water loss. Other arid-environment traits include smaller leaf surface area, fewer stomata, and hairs on leaves. These features help conserve water, but they also create a tradeoff because plants still need enough transpiration for photosynthesis and growth.

In wet environments such as tropical rainforests, water is less limiting. In those settings, natural selection may favor plants that move water quickly so they can grow faster than nearby plants or grow tall enough to avoid herbivores. Differences in transpiration rates therefore reflect both environmental pressures and plant species traits.

Scientists can estimate transpiration rates with a potometer, a device that measures water uptake in a leafy plant. The idea is that transpiration drives the water uptake that the potometer records. Researchers can also compare plants by looking at leaf features such as stomata size and number per unit area.

Studying transpiration helps explain how plants adapt to different environments. It can also guide crop growth under changing climate conditions and rising food demands. Transpiration affects the global water cycle, ecosystems, and human populations, so understanding it can support better water use and crop breeding. Plants with high water-use efficiency may help increase food production per unit of water and reduce the need for irrigation.
