Extinction

La maggior parte di queste estinzioni è avvenuta nel tempo a causa di cambiamenti ambientali come il nostro mammut lanoso. Ma anche altri fattori come la competizione per le risorse con altre specie e l'incapacità di evitare la predazione possono portare una specie all'estinzione. Prendete questi pesci, per esempio. Entrambe le specie condividono un habitat, ma il pesce verde è più bravo a eludere i predatori, rendendo più probabile la sua sopravvivenza e alla fine portando all'estinzione del pesce arancione. Anche la caccia eccessiva e altri fenomeni causati dall'uomo, come l'inquinamento, possono causare l'estinzione di una specie. 
Le estinzioni che si verificano a livello globale sono chiamate estinzioni di massa e sono tipicamente causate da grandi eventi catastrofici come impatti dallo spazio, attività vulcanica significativa e altri fenomeni che causano il cambiamento climatico globale. Durante questi eventi, alti tassi di estinzione superano i tassi di nuova speciazione, con conseguente perdita globale di specie. 
L'estinzione di massa più nota è il Cretaceo-Paleogene o estinzione K-Pg, famosa per aver posto fine al regno dei dinosauri. Questa estinzione può essere vista anche negli strati rocciosi o negli strati della terra, dove vediamo una brusca perdita di specie dalla documentazione fossile circa 66 milioni di anni fa, che coincide anche con uno strato di sedimenti unico contenente iridio, un metallo che non si trova spesso nella crosta terrestre. L'iridio è, tuttavia, presente in quantità elevate negli asteroidi, fornendo agli scienziati un indizio sulla causa dell'estinzione. L'impatto nella penisola dello Yucatan in Messico ha creato il cratere di Chicxulub, largo 180 chilometri, e ha innescato una serie di eventi catastrofici che avrebbero alterato la terra per sempre. In primo luogo, le tempeste di fuoco avrebbero devastato il continente nordamericano creando un'enorme nuvola di fumo e polvere. Ben presto, l'atmosfera acida e la fitta nebbia che bloccava il calore del sole portarono a un congelamento profondo con temperature globali che scesero sotto lo zero per diversi anni. L'estinzione di massa causata da questi drastici cambiamenti ambientali colpì tutte le specie conosciute e tre quarti di tutte le specie viventi all'epoca si estinsero nell'equivalente evolutivo di un battito di ciglia. 
Nel corso del tempo, mentre il clima terrestre tornava lentamente alla normalità, le specie rimanenti, che includevano piccoli mammiferi, si ripresero e subirono radiazioni adattative per riempire le molte specie appena lasciate libere. <h4>La storia della vita sulla Terra</h4>
Fossili di organismi che erano diversi da qualsiasi cosa vivente oggi erano stati documentati già nel XVII secolo, ma fu solo all'inizio delXIX secolo che gli scienziati iniziarono a riconoscere che gli strati successivi di rocce fossili erano come pagine successive nella storia della vita sulla terra. Sebbene questo riconoscimento abbia dato origine alla nascita del campo della paleontologia, l'idea della completa estinzione globale di una specie doveva ancora essere pienamente accettata. Quando Charles Darwin pubblicò "Sull'origine delle specie" nel 1859, il concetto di estinzione delle specie stava diventando sempre più accettato, ma la causa delle estinzioni rimaneva un mistero. L'estinzione continua era parte integrante della teoria della selezione naturale di Darwin, poiché la vedeva come un risultato logico dell'evoluzione di specie che erano più competitive, migliori predatori o più adatte dei loro antenati in un altro modo. Pertanto, gli antenati si erano estinti per essere sostituiti dai loro discendenti superiori. L'unica illustrazione che Darwin ha incluso nel suo libro è quella di un albero filogenetico primitivo, a cui ha fatto riferimento in più occasioni per sostenere la sua tesi secondo cui l'estinzione è un sottoprodotto dell'evoluzione.
Ogni organismo vivente viene all'esistenza, prevale per un certo periodo di tempo e alla fine perisce. Lo stesso vale anche per le specie, quindi il destino ultimo di tutte le specie è l'estinzione. Una specie si estingue quando non può più sopravvivere e riprodursi nel suo ambiente e non può trasferirsi in uno nuovo. Si stima che oltre il 99% di tutte le specie che siano mai esistite si siano estinte, con la maggior parte che ha una "vita" media di 1-10 milioni di anni. L'estinzione può essere graduale a causa di lenti cambiamenti ambientali o dell'incapacità di competere con una specie emergente, oppure può essere improvvisa a causa di eventi catastrofici, distruzione dell'habitat, inquinamento o caccia eccessiva.
<h4>Estinzione su larga scala</h4>
Le estinzioni di massa, o eventi di estinzione, sono grandi diminuzioni della biodiversità in tutto il mondo, quando i tassi di estinzione superano i tassi di speciazione. Le estinzioni di massa sono generalmente causate da eventi geologici o astronomici, come eruzioni vulcaniche, cambiamenti nella composizione atmosferica, innalzamento o abbassamento del livello del mare, raffreddamento e riscaldamento globale e impatti di asteroidi.
Sono stati identificati cinque grandi eventi di estinzione di massa, che sono stati utilizzati per suddividere il tempo geologico in ere o periodi distinti che sono nidificati all'interno delle ere. Quando più specie si estinguono molto bruscamente, scompaiono dalla documentazione fossile, fornendo una metrica per la fine di una data suddivisione della scala temporale geologica e l'inizio di un nuovo periodo di tempo.
<h4>L'estinzione del Permiano-Triassico</h4>
La più grande estinzione di massa, l'estinzione del Permiano-Triassico, nota anche come "La Grande Morìa" o "Disastro del Permiano-Triassico" ebbe luogo circa 252 milioni di anni fa, alla fine del periodo Permiano, portando oltre il 90% di tutte le specie all'estinzione1. Un'altra estinzione di massa ben nota è l'estinzione del Cretaceo-Paleogene (K-Pg) o Cretaceo-Terziario (KT), avvenuta circa 66 milioni di anni fa2. Mentre la causa dell'estinzione del K-Pg è stata ampiamente dibattuta, il consenso si è stabilito su un impatto di un asteroide sulla penisola dello Yucatan in Messico come la causa più importante dell'evento. Questo massiccio impatto ha portato all'instabilità geologica in alcune aree, portando a terremoti, quantità significative di attività vulcanica e un drammatico innalzamento del livello del mare. Inoltre, ha anche innescato enormi incendi, che a loro volta hanno riempito l'aria con uno spesso strato di cenere, fumo e polvere, bloccando il sole e portando a un periodo di raffreddamento globale.
La tempistica dell'impatto dell'asteroide segue le massicce eruzioni vulcaniche che hanno causato la formazione dei Trappi del Deccan, nell'India centro-occidentale. Queste eruzioni sono avvenute in un intervallo di ben 30.000 anni e sono iniziate prima dell'impatto dell'asteroide. Hanno causato la più grande formazione vulcanica sulla terra che copre un'area di oltre 200.000 miglia quadrate. Queste eruzioni avrebbero anche causato un cambiamento climatico prolungato e quindi sono viste come una causa alternativa all'impatto dell'asteroide o un aumento delle perturbazioni ambientali che hanno seguito l'impatto.
<h4>Perdita globale di specie</h4>
L'evento K-Pg è famoso soprattutto per l'estinzione dei dinosauri; tuttavia, i dinosauri non sono stati gli unici taxa colpiti: circa il 75% di tutte le specie si è estinto durante questo evento. Tuttavia, non tutti i taxa sono stati colpiti allo stesso modo, e alcuni hanno successivamente beneficiato dell'apertura di nicchie precedentemente occupate2. I mammiferi e gli anfibi facevano entrambi parte di quest'ultimo gruppo. Mentre la diversità è andata persa durante l'estinzione, questi due taxa hanno perso la diversità a un tasso inferiore rispetto a molti altri taxa ed entrambi i gruppi hanno subito una radiazione adattativa in seguito alla scomparsa di altri grandi tetrapodi, come gli arcosauri. Degli arcosauri, solo i lignaggi che hanno portato a uccelli e coccodrilli sono sopravvissuti. Quindi, i dinosauri non aviari non sono osservati oltre il confine K-Pg nella documentazione fossile, e si ritiene che si siano estinti rapidamente e completamente a causa della loro mancanza di capacità di ripararsi e della loro dipendenza dalle diete carnivore. La documentazione fossile degli insetti mostra ampie oscillazioni all'inizio del Paleogene. È possibile che questa variazione sia dovuta all'imperfezione della documentazione fossile e che alcuni stadi fossero più inclini a conservare i fossili rispetto ad altri. È anche noto, tuttavia, che gli insetti hanno sperimentato andamenti simili ad altri taxa, diminuendo subito dopo l'estinzione del K-Pg per poi riprendersi. Un punto alto al massimo termico può essere osservato anche per questo taxon. Anche gli osteitti, o i pesci ossei, sperimentano un modello irregolare di diversità. I fossili marini di acque profonde in particolare sono difficili da trovare, il che potrebbe contribuire a questa irregolarità, tuttavia vale la pena notare che la più alta diversità di pesci ossei è al massimo termico. Si ritiene che i mari poco profondi abbiano subito gli effetti peggiori durante l'evento di estinzione a causa del maggiore impatto dell'innalzamento del livello del mare e della riduzione della fotosintesi rispetto ad altri habitat marini. I molluschi hanno subito un enorme declino in seguito all'estinzione del K-Pg e questi numeri non sono più stati recuperati entro la fine del Paleogene. Echinodermi e crostacei sperimentano livelli simili di declino, tuttavia questi numeri possono anche essere influenzati dalla mancanza di strutture fossilizzanti in entrambi questi gruppi.
Alcuni scienziati hanno suggerito che siamo entrati in una nuova era geologica nota come Antropocene, insieme alla "Sesta Estinzione di Massa"1-2. Questo suggerimento si basa sui cambiamenti globali e sull'alto tasso di estinzione globale a causa dell'attività umana, tra cui la caccia eccessiva, l'inquinamento, la distruzione dell'habitat, le specie invasive e il cambiamento climatico. Poiché l'attuale estinzione è causata dall'attività umana, è diversa dalle altre estinzioni di massa, che sono in gran parte il risultato di processi astronomici e geologici. L'attuale tasso di estinzione è fino a 100 volte superiore a quello che ci si aspetta senza l'influenza umana ed è probabilmente più alto, considerando le specie che non sono ancora state scoperte. Considerando che il tasso di estinzione dell'Antropocene è uguale o superiore a quelli associati ai precedenti eventi di estinzione di massa, è necessaria un'azione rapida per invertire le enormi perdite subite dalle popolazioni vulnerabili.

mass extinction and the fossil record

Mass extinction is a major loss of species, and the fossil record shows how these events changed life on Earth. Fossils from different rock layers helped scientists see that life has a long history. In the early 19th century, that idea helped launch paleontology, the study of fossils and ancient life.

At first, many scientists did not fully accept that a species could disappear forever. They thought unknown organisms seen only in fossils might still live in unexplored places on Earth. By 1859, when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, extinction was becoming more accepted, but its cause was still unclear. Darwin linked extinction to natural selection, where better-adapted species outcompete older ones and replace them over time.

A species goes extinct when it can no longer survive and reproduce in its environment and cannot move to a new one. Over 99% of species that have ever existed are estimated to have gone extinct. Most species last about 1 to 10 million years. Extinction can happen slowly because of environmental change or competition, or suddenly because of disasters, habitat loss, pollution, or overhunting.

Mass extinctions, also called extinction events, are global drops in biodiversity. They happen when extinction rates become higher than speciation rates, which is the rate at which new species form. These events are often linked to volcanic eruptions, changes in air composition, sea level changes, global cooling or warming, and asteroid impacts. Five major mass extinctions are recognized, and they help divide geologic time into eras and periods. When many species disappear at once, they also leave a clear signal in the fossil record.

The largest known mass extinction was the Permian-Triassic extinction, also called the Great Dying, about 252 million years ago. It happened at the end of the Permian Period and eliminated over 90% of species. Another famous event was the Cretaceous-Palaeogene, or K-Pg, extinction about 66 million years ago. Scientists now agree that a huge asteroid impact on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico was a major cause. The impact likely triggered earthquakes, major volcanic activity, and sea level rise, and it also caused fires that filled the air with ash, smoke, and dust. That blocked sunlight and led to global cooling.

The K-Pg event also came after the Deccan Traps eruptions in west-central India. These eruptions lasted as long as 30,000 years and formed the largest volcanic feature on Earth, covering more than 200,000 square miles. They likely added to long-term climate change. For that reason, some scientists view the eruptions as an alternative cause or as an added stress that worked with the asteroid impact.

The K-Pg extinction is best known for the loss of dinosaurs, but they were not the only group affected. About 75% of all species went extinct. Some groups later benefited when empty ecological niches opened up. Mammals and amphibians lost diversity at a lower rate than many other groups and then diversified after large tetrapods such as archosaurs declined. Among the archosaurs, only the lineages leading to birds and crocodiles survived. Non-avian dinosaurs do not appear above the K-Pg boundary in the fossil record, and they are thought to have died out quickly because they could not shelter well and depended on carnivorous diets.

Other groups also show the effect of the K-Pg event in different ways. Insects dropped after the extinction and then rebounded, although changes in fossil preservation may affect the pattern. Bony fish, or Osteichthyes, show an uneven diversity record, especially because deep-water fossils are hard to find. Shallow seas may have been hit hardest because sea level rise and reduced photosynthesis affected them more. Molluscs declined greatly and did not recover by the end of the Paleogene. Echinoderms and crustaceans also declined, although their fossil record may be affected by the lack of hard parts that fossilize easily.

Some scientists think Earth may now be entering the Anthropocene, along with a possible Sixth Mass Extinction. This idea is based on rapid global change and high extinction rates caused by human activity. Overhunting, pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, and climate change all contribute. The current extinction rate may be up to 100 times higher than expected without human influence, and it could be even higher because many species have not yet been discovered. Because this rate is comparable to earlier mass extinctions, rapid action is needed to protect vulnerable populations.
