Community Diversity

Un ecosistema è una comunità di componenti viventi e non viventi che interagiscono in un'area. Ora che sappiamo cosa misurare, impariamo come misurare la biodiversità. Un'area con un valore H maggiore è generalmente più diversificata di una con un H inferiore. Questa tecnica combinata di quadrato casuale e transetto fornisce una valutazione versatile e più equa di come i diversi habitat all'interno della stessa comunità si confrontano in termini di diversità.

<h4>Biodiversità</h4>

Il termine "salute dell'ecosistema" è metaforico perché è difficile confrontare la salute di ecosistemi molto diversi e non esiste un unico valore che possa essere utilizzato per quantificare la salute di un ecosistema. Ad esempio, i deserti e le foreste hanno diversità di specie molto diverse, ma non è detto che uno sia più sano dell'altro. Pertanto, sono state formulate più metriche per rappresentare la salute di un ecosistema e il loro utilizzo dipende dagli obiettivi dello studio. Quindi, "salute dell'ecosistema" può riferirsi a quanto sia prezioso un ecosistema per gli esseri umani. Ad esempio, il valore dei servizi ecosistemici come il sequestro del carbonio da parte degli alberi o l'impollinazione da parte delle api viene utilizzato per quantificare la salute degli ecosistemi. Altre metriche possono misurare il numero di specie rare presenti in un ecosistema, la resistenza di un ecosistema al fuoco o altre misurazioni di fattori biotici e abiotici. Per gli ecologi, una misura della salute molto popolare è quella della diversità biologica, o "biodiversità". La biodiversità è una misura della varietà di specie biologiche presenti in un'area e può essere calcolata utilizzando l'indice di biodiversità di Shannon-Wiener.

L'indice di Shannon-Wiener richiede due misurazioni da parte di una comunità locale: ricchezza di specie e uniformità. La ricchezza di specie è il numero totale di specie distinte all'interno di una comunità locale. Un'area priva di specie, come ad esempio un parcheggio appena asfaltato, avrebbe un valore di ricchezza pari a 0. Le foreste pluviali, note per sostenere alcune delle comunità più diversificate della Terra, hanno una ricchezza di specie molto maggiore. Sebbene la presenza di molte specie coincida generalmente con l'avere un ecosistema diversificato e sano, anche l'uniformità deve essere considerata. Ad esempio, quando una specie domina l'area mentre le altre sono molto rare, la biodiversità in quest'area è inferiore rispetto a un'area con specie di uguale abbondanza. Pertanto, le aree con molte specie che sono relativamente uguali in abbondanza hanno i punteggi più alti di biodiversità.

Shannon-Wiener non è l'unica misura della biodiversità e della salute degli ecosistemi. Ad esempio, un indice popolare, chiamato indice EPT, viene utilizzato per determinare la qualità dell'acqua nei sistemi fluviali assegnando valori di salubrità ai singoli organismi. Più specificamente, questo indice considera tre ordini di invertebrati sensibili agli inquinanti presenti nei fiumi, gli Efemerotteri, i Plecotteri e i Tricotteri. La presenza di queste specie intolleranti agli inquinanti in un corso d'acqua è utilizzata come indicatore di una buona qualità dell'acqua e l'ecosistema in questione è considerato sano.

Spesso, le aree ecologicamente rilevanti sono troppo grandi per essere campionate nella loro interezza. Per risolvere questo problema, gli ecologi campionano più appezzamenti più piccoli in tutta l'area di studio utilizzando i quadrat, che sono piccoli fotogrammi di una dimensione predeterminata posizionati in punti in tutto il sito di studio, in cui un ricercatore identifica e registra tutti gli individui delle specie di interesse. Quando si considera un numero sufficiente di campioni quadrati, gli scienziati possono estrapolare per fare stime accurate delle comunità ecologiche.

<h4>Impatti dei cambiamenti ecologici</h4>

La maggior parte dei cambiamenti ecologici naturali avviene su una scala temporale estesa. Inoltre, gli esseri umani continuano ad alterare gli ecosistemi. Per valutare i cambiamenti a lungo termine negli ecosistemi, gli scienziati hanno istituito siti di ricerca ecologica a lungo termine (LTER). Uno degli LTER più longevi è la Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest situata nel New Hampshire, negli Stati Uniti. Questo sito e altri hanno una maggiore conoscenza dei modelli di scala degli ecosistemi derivanti dalla deforestazione, dai cambiamenti dei regimi idrologici e da altri disturbi ecologici a lungo termine.

Quando un cambiamento importante si verifica molto rapidamente, si parla di disturbo ecologico. Incendi, uragani e inondazioni sono esempi di disturbi ecologici. I disturbi possono alterare un ecosistema spazzando via i nutrienti e modificando la composizione della comunità biologica. Dopo un disturbo, le specie più resistenti e resilienti sono favorite per la sopravvivenza. Una specie o comunità resistente è quella in grado di sopravvivere a gravi disturbi con danni minimi e di riprendersi rapidamente da un disturbo, come i denti di leone dopo che un prato è stato falciato. Il campionamento di un sito per molti anni prima e dopo le perturbazioni non è fattibile, ma il confronto di aree diverse con diversi regimi di perturbazione offre una soluzione parziale a questo problema.

Gli habitat disturbati sono solitamente irregolari, pertanto l'utilizzo di quadrati posizionati in modo casuale potrebbe comportare una sottorappresentazione delle specie e stime errate della biodiversità. Per questo motivo, è fondamentale considerare l'ambiente circostante e alcune delle caratteristiche dell'habitat che si sta studiando. Ciò si ottiene nell'ecologia del paesaggio studiando sia gli habitat centrali che quelli marginali. Un habitat centrale si trova al centro di una chiazza, circondato dallo stesso tipo di habitat. Al contrario, un habitat di confine, noto anche come habitat di confine, confina con un diverso tipo di habitat. Gli habitat marginali, come quelli in cui un habitat forestale incontra un habitat di prato, possono avere una maggiore biodiversità perché in essi si possono trovare specie di entrambi i tipi di habitat. Tali differenze nella biodiversità ai margini degli habitat sono chiamate effetti limite. Per valutare queste aree di transizione, gli ecologi utilizzano percorsi lungo gli habitat, chiamati transetti, e registrano la biodiversità di piccoli siti di campionamento a intervalli prestabiliti lungo il percorso. Tuttavia, non tutti gli habitat avranno effetti limite e talvolta le specie limite sono invasive e possono crescere in una gamma più ampia di habitat, quindi non sono indicative di un ecosistema "sano".

Oltre alle misure delle specie, gli scienziati possono anche prendere misure dei componenti chimici di un ecosistema per valutarne la salute. Ad esempio, potrebbero verificare la presenza di inquinamento o esaminare la qualità del suolo misurando i nutrienti presenti. Queste informazioni possono anche essere utili per aiutare a spiegare i cambiamenti nei modelli di biodiversità nelle diverse regioni di una comunità. Questi dati richiedono l'uso di statistiche multivariate e altri strumenti matematici complessi che vengono continuamente sviluppati.

Mentre le popolazioni umane continuano a crescere e ad alterare gli ecosistemi in tutto il mondo, gli scienziati e i cittadini interessati lavorano per conservare e preservare gli ecosistemi minacciati. Un modo per ripristinare ecosistemi fortemente alterati è attraverso il biorisanamento, che prevede il rilascio di organismi biologici, solitamente microrganismi, per abbattere gli inquinanti e ripristinare i tratti favorevoli di un ecosistema3. Un esempio di ciò è il rilascio di microrganismi nelle acque reflue per abbattere l'inquinamento e riportare l'acqua a una condizione abitabile per i pesci4. Pertanto, i modi creativi di ripristinare gli ecosistemi diventeranno sempre più importanti per rimediare agli effetti umani sugli ecosistemi.

measuring ecosystem health

Ecosystem health is measured by looking at how species, habitats, and nonliving conditions interact in the same area. An ecological community includes many populations that live together and affect one another. When biotic parts, or living parts, also interact with abiotic parts, or nonliving parts, they form an ecosystem. These systems can be very small, like microbes in the human digestive tract, or very large, like a forest linked by the carbon cycle.

Ecologists study ecosystem health because urbanization and climate change are changing ecosystems around the world. A change in one part of an ecosystem can affect other connected parts. That can lead to major shifts in the whole system. Because of this, scientists want to measure and predict the current and future health of ecosystems.

There is no single way to measure ecosystem health. The term is metaphorical, and different ecosystems are not easy to compare directly. A desert and a forest may have very different species diversity, but one is not automatically healthier than the other. Researchers use different metrics based on the goal of the study. Some look at ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration by trees or pollination by bees. Others measure rare species, fire resistance, or other biotic and abiotic factors.

One common measure is biodiversity, or biological diversity. Biodiversity describes the variety of species in an area and can be calculated with the Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index. This index uses two measurements: species richness and evenness. Species richness is the total number of different species in a local community. A freshly paved parking lot would have a richness of 0, while a rainforest would have a much higher richness. Evenness matters too. If one species dominates and the others are rare, biodiversity is lower than in a community where species are more evenly abundant.

Another health measure is the EPT index, which is used in river systems to check water quality. EPT stands for Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, which are mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. These invertebrates are sensitive to pollution, so finding them in a waterway is a sign of good water quality. In that case, the ecosystem is considered healthy.

Ecologists often cannot sample a large habitat all at once. To solve this, they use quadrats, which are small frames of a set size placed at different points in the study area. Inside each quadrat, a researcher identifies and records the species of interest. With enough samples, scientists can estimate the ecological community more accurately.

Ecological change can happen slowly over many years or quickly as a disturbance. Fires, hurricanes, and floods are examples of disturbances. They can remove nutrients and change the makeup of the biological community. Afterward, the most resistant and resilient species are more likely to survive. A resistant species can handle major disturbance with little harm and recover quickly, like dandelions after a lawn is mowed.

To study long-term change, scientists use Long Term Ecological Research sites, or LTERs. The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire is one of the longest running examples. These sites have helped scientists understand long-term patterns linked to deforestation, changes in water flow, and other major disturbances. Since it is not practical to sample the same site for many years before and after every event, researchers also compare areas with different disturbance histories.

Disturbed habitats are often patchy, so random quadrats can miss important species and give poor biodiversity estimates. Ecologists also study landscape patterns by comparing core habitats and edge habitats. A core habitat is found in the middle of a patch. An edge habitat, or boundary habitat, borders a different habitat type. For example, where a forest meets a meadow, biodiversity may be higher because species from both habitats can be present. These changes are called edge effects, and they are often measured with transects, or paths across the habitat, where small sampling sites are recorded at set intervals.

Not every edge shows an edge effect. Some edge species are invasive and can live in many habitat types, so they may not indicate a healthy ecosystem. Scientists also measure chemical features of ecosystems, such as pollution levels or soil nutrients. These data help explain biodiversity patterns in different parts of a community. Other variables, including temperature, precipitation over time, and species traits, can be harder to measure and may require advanced statistical analysis.

To study ecosystems across large areas and long time scales, ecologists are using remote sensing. This method uses satellite images to estimate variables across the globe. The data often require multivariate statistics and other complex math tools that are still being improved. As people continue to change ecosystems worldwide, conservation and restoration have become increasingly important. One restoration method is bioremediation, which uses biological organisms, usually microorganisms, to break down pollutants and restore favorable ecosystem traits. In wastewater, for example, microorganisms can help remove pollution and make the water habitable for fish.
