<h4>Panoramica</h4>

Il glucosio è la fonte di quasi tutta l'energia utilizzata dagli organismi. Il primo passo della conversione del glucosio in energia utilizzabile è chiamato glicolisi. La glicolisi si verifica nel citosol della cellula in due fasi: una fase che richiede energia e una fase di rilascio di energia. Nei primi tre passi, il glucosio viene convertito in forme diverse e si attacca a due gruppi di fosfati donati da due molecole ATP, con conseguente zucchero instabile. Nelle due fasi successive, lo zucchero instabile si divide in due isomeri di zucchero che vengono convertiti o utilizzati direttamente nella fase successiva della glicolisi.

<h4>Il processo</h4>

In primo luogo, il glucosio riceve un gruppo di fosfati dall'ATP convertendolo in una forma più reattiva (glucosio 6 fosfato). Poiché il glucosio attaccato al fosfato caricato negativamente non può attraversare la membrana della cellula idrofobica, l'aggiunta di un gruppo di fosfati intrappola anche il glucosio all'interno della cellula.

Successivamente, la forma più reattiva di glucosio viene convertita in uno dei suoi isomeri, fruttosio 6 fosfato, che è necessario per i successivi passi di glicolisi che richiedono energia.

Il fruttosio a 6 fosfati riceve quindi un gruppo di fosfati da una seconda molecola ATP. Questo converte il fruttolo 6-fosfato in fruttosio 1,6-bisfhosfato, uno zucchero instabile.

Questo zucchero instabile si divide in due distinti isomeri di zucchero a tre carbonio, gliceraldeide 3-fosfato e DHAP. La gliceraldeide 3-fosfato può essere utilizzato direttamente nella fase successiva della glicolisi, mentre DHAP viene convertito in gliceraldeide 3-fosfato.

Glycolysis begins in the cytosol, where glucose is prepared for use as energy. This process has two phases: an energy-requiring phase and an energy-releasing phase. The first phase changes glucose into a more reactive, unstable form before it can move into later steps.

In the first step, glucose is phosphorylated, which means a phosphate group is added from ATP. This produces glucose 6-phosphate. The added phosphate is negatively charged, so it cannot cross the hydrophobic cell membrane. As a result, glucose is trapped inside the cell.

Next, glucose 6-phosphate is converted into its isomer, fructose 6-phosphate. An isomer is a molecule with the same atoms but a different arrangement. Fructose 6-phosphate is needed for the remaining energy-requiring steps of glycolysis. It is then phosphorylated by a second ATP molecule, forming fructose 1,6-bisphosphate.

Fructose 1,6-bisphosphate is unstable and splits into two three-carbon sugar isomers. These are glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and DHAP. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate can go straight into the next phase of glycolysis. DHAP is converted into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate before continuing.
