The First Law of Thermodynamics

In altre parole, c’è sempre stata, e sempre ci sarà, esattamente la stessa quantità di energia nell’universo. L’energia esiste in molte forme diverse. Secondo la prima legge della termodinamica, l'energia può trasferirsi da un luogo all'altro o trasformarsi in forme diverse, ma non può essere creata o distrutta. I trasferimenti e le trasformazioni di energia avvengono continuamente intorno a noi. Le lampadine trasformano l'energia elettrica in energia luminosa. Le stufe a gas trasformano l'energia chimica del gas naturale in energia termica. Le piante eseguono una delle trasformazioni energetiche più utili dal punto di vista biologico sulla terra: quella di convertire l'energia solare in energia chimica immagazzinata all'interno delle molecole organiche.

La sfida per tutti gli organismi viventi è ottenere energia dall’ambiente circostante in forme che si possano trasferire o trasformare in energia utilizzabile per svolgere lavoro. Le cellule viventi si sono evolute per affrontare molto bene questa sfida. L'energia chimica immagazzinata all'interno di molecole organiche come zuccheri e grassi si trasforma attraverso una serie di reazioni chimiche cellulari in energia all'interno delle molecole di ATP. L'energia nelle molecole di ATP è facilmente accessibile per svolgere lavoro. Esempi dei tipi di lavoro che le cellule devono svolgere includono la costruzione di molecole complesse, il trasporto di materiali, l’alimentazione del movimento pulsante di ciglia o flagelli, la contrazione delle fibre muscolari per creare movimento e la riproduzione.

The first law of thermodynamics describes how energy changes form in the universe. The total amount of energy stays constant. Energy can move from one place to another or change into a different form, but it cannot be created or destroyed.

These energy changes happen in everyday life. A light bulb changes electrical energy into light energy. A gas stove changes chemical energy in natural gas into heat energy. Plants also carry out a major energy transformation when they convert sunlight energy into the chemical energy stored in organic molecules.

Living organisms must take in energy from their surroundings in forms they can use. Cells handle this by changing chemical energy in sugars and fats through a series of chemical reactions into energy stored in ATP molecules. ATP is a molecule that cells can use easily to do work. That work includes building complex molecules, moving materials, powering cilia or flagella, contracting muscle fibers, and supporting reproduction.
