L'HNO2 è un acido più debole rispetto all'HNO3. Ionizza per dare ioni idronio e nitrito e ha un pKun valore di 3,37.
Poiché l'HNO2 è instabile, viene preparato in situ facendo reagire NaNO2 con un acido minerale forte, come l'acido cloridrico o solforico.
Nella stessa condizione acida, il gruppo –OH dell'acido nitroso subisce la protonazione per dare uno ione ossonio, che perde una molecola d'acqua per generare il catione nitrosilico o lo ione nitrosonio.
Lo ione nitrosonio elettrofilo può quindi reagire con l'azoto amminico nucleofilo.
La reazione di HNO2 con ammine alifatiche e aromatiche primarie, secondarie e terziarie si traduce in prodotti diversi.
Ad esempio, le ammine primarie, dopo il trattamento con HNO2, producono sali di diazonio, mentre le ammine secondarie producono N-nitrosammine.
Quando reagiscono con HNO2, le ammine alifatiche terziarie subiscono protonazione per produrre sali idrosolubili e composti N-nitrosoammonio. Al contrario, le arilammine terziarie subiscono una sostituzione aromatica elettrofila per formare composti aromatici C-nitroso.

Nitrous acid reacts with amines in acidic conditions, and the products depend on the type of amine. It is a key nitrogen-containing acid, but it is weaker than nitric acid. Nitrous acid has a pKa of 3.37, so it ionizes in water to form nitrite ion and hydronium ion.

Nitrous acid is unstable, so it is made in situ, or formed in the reaction mixture as needed. A sodium nitrite solution is combined with a cold aqueous acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. In acid, the –OH group of nitrous acid is protonated first. This gives an oxonium ion, which then loses water to form nitrosonium ion.

Nitrosonium ion is a highly reactive electrophile, meaning it seeks electrons. It reacts with the nucleophilic nitrogen atom of an amine. Primary amines form diazonium salts in this reaction, and this process is called diazotization. Secondary amines give N-nitrosamines instead.

The outcome also changes with tertiary amines. Tertiary aliphatic amines form water-soluble salts and N-nitrosoammonium compounds. Tertiary arylamines react by electrophilic aromatic substitution to make aromatic C-nitroso compounds.
