Le ammine sono derivati organici di un composto inorganico, l'ammoniaca, con uno o più idrogeni sostituiti da gruppi alchilici o arilici.
Sono classificate come ammine primarie, secondarie o terziarie in base al grado di sostituzione all'atomo di azoto.
Se l'atomo di azoto è legato a uno o più atomi di carbonio alchilici, l'ammina è classificata come ammina alifatica. Se uno dei carboni legati fa parte di un gruppo arilico, l'ammina è un'ammina aromatica.
Le ammine in cui l'azoto fa parte di una struttura ad anello sono chiamate ammine eterocicliche. Se l'anello è aromatico, tali ammine sono classificate come ammine aromatiche eterocicliche.
L'atomo di azoto può anche portare quattro gruppi organilici. Tali ammine hanno una carica positiva formale ed esistono come sali di ammonio quaternario.

Le ammine sono derivati organici dell'ammoniaca. Si formano sostituendo uno o più protoni di ammoniaca con gruppi alchilici o arilici. A seconda del numero di gruppi organici legati all'azoto, le ammine vengono classificate come primarie, secondarie o terziarie. Le ammine primarie hanno un gruppo organico attaccato all'atomo di azoto, mentre le ammine secondarie e terziarie hanno rispettivamente due e tre gruppi organici attaccati all'atomo di azoto.

In un'ammina aromatica, almeno un gruppo arilico è legato all'atomo di azoto. Se l'atomo di azoto fa parte di un anello, tali ammine sono classificate come ammine eterocicliche. Inoltre, se l'azoto è eteroatomo in un anello alifatico, tali ammine sono classificate come ammine alifatiche eterocicliche. Amines are organic derivatives of ammonia. They form when one or more ammonia protons are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Chemists sort amines by the number of organyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom.

Primary amines have one organyl group on nitrogen. Secondary amines have two, and tertiary amines have three. If a fourth organyl group is present, the nitrogen carries a formal positive charge. These compounds are called quaternary ammonium salts.

Amines are also grouped as aliphatic or aromatic. An amine is aliphatic when only alkyl groups are bonded to the nitrogen atom. In an aromatic amine, at least one aryl group is bonded to nitrogen. If the nitrogen atom is part of a ring, the amine is classified as a heterocyclic amine.

Some heterocyclic amines are further divided by the type of ring they belong to. If nitrogen is the heteroatom in an aliphatic ring, the compound is a heterocyclic aliphatic amine. If nitrogen is part of an aromatic ring, it is a heterocyclic aromatic amine.

Many nitrogen-containing molecules from plants are called alkaloids. Most of these are physiologically active in the human body. Coniine is one example of a heterocyclic aliphatic amine, and ingestion can cause respiratory issues, weakness, or death in severe cases. Cocaine is a tertiary amine from coca plant leaves, and it stimulates the central nervous system when consumed.
