L'attività di una specie è una misura della sua concentrazione effettiva e considera fattori aggiuntivi, come l'effetto degli elettroliti sull'equilibrio chimico.

Chemical potential and activity describe how a species behaves in a solution. Activity is the effective concentration of a species. It accounts for the electrolytes near that species and depends on the ionic strength of the solution.

Activity is calculated as molar concentration multiplied by the activity coefficient. This makes it a more precise way to describe a species in solution than concentration alone. The thermodynamic equilibrium constant is also defined more accurately using activity instead of concentration.

Chemical potential is the formal basis for activity. It is also called the partial molar Gibbs energy. For a given species, it is the Gibbs energy change per mole when temperature, pressure, and the number of moles of other species stay constant.

Chemical potential also helps explain whether a reaction can happen spontaneously. For spontaneity, the chemical potential of the products must be lower than that of the reactants. When the amount of other species in the solution changes, the chemical potential changes too. As a result, the activity changes as well.
