I metodi titrimetrici sono procedure quantitative utilizzate in chimica analitica.
Ad esempio, le titolazioni volumetriche comportano la misurazione del volume di un titolante di concentrazione nota necessario per reagire completamente con un analita.
Mentre nelle titolazioni gravimetriche, un analita reagisce con un titolante per produrre un precipitato che viene isolato e pesato.
In alternativa, le titolazioni coulometriche comportano la misurazione della carica necessaria per completare una reazione elettrochimica.
Le strategie per la titolazione includono la titolazione diretta, in cui un titolante reagisce con un analita fino a raggiungere il punto finale.
Altre strategie vengono utilizzate se la reazione è lenta o non c'è una reazione di titolazione diretta.
La titolazione inversa consiste nel determinare l'eccesso di una soluzione standard utilizzata per consumare un analita mediante titolazione con una seconda soluzione standard.
Se l'analita sposta un gruppo da un complesso, la quantità del gruppo spostato viene determinata utilizzando la titolazione per spostamento.

In chimica, i metodi titrimetrici sono generalmente classificati in tre tipi: volumetrico, gravimetrico e coulometrico. Le titolazioni volumetriche comportano la misurazione del volume di un titolante di concentrazione nota necessario per reagire completamente con un analita. Nelle titolazioni gravimetriche, la soluzione standard reagisce con l'analita per formare un precipitato insolubile, che viene filtrato, essiccato e pesato. Nelle titolazioni coulometriche, la corrente viene applicata a una reazione elettrochimica fino al completamento della reazione e la carica richiesta per questa reazione viene calcolata per aiutare a determinare la quantità o la concentrazione del/i reagente/i.

Generalmente, nelle titolazioni, all'analita viene aggiunto un titolante con una concentrazione nota fino al consumo dell'analita, ovvero al raggiungimento del punto finale. In questo caso il processo si chiama titolazione diretta. In alcuni casi, la reazione potrebbe essere troppo lenta per ottenere un punto finale netto. In questi casi viene utilizzata la titolazione retroattiva. In una titolazione inversa, l'analita può reagire con una quantità in eccesso di una soluzione standard e la quantità rimanente di questa soluzione standard viene titolata con una seconda soluzione standard. È quindi possibile calcolare l'esatta quantità della prima soluzione standard necessaria per reagire con l'analita.

A volte non è possibile trovare un indicatore adatto né per una titolazione diretta né per una titolazione indiretta (a ritroso). In questo caso si può utilizzare la titolazione per spostamento, in cui l'analita sposta un reagente, solitamente da un complesso, e il reagente spostato viene misurato mediante titolazione.

Titrimetric methods use a standard solution to measure the amount of an analyte in chemistry. The main categories are volumetric, gravimetric, and coulometric methods. Each one reaches the endpoint in a different way.

In volumetric titrations, the key measurement is the volume of a titrant with a known concentration. The titrant is added until it reacts completely with the analyte. In gravimetric titrations, the standard solution forms an insoluble precipitate with the analyte. That solid is then filtered, dried, and weighed.

Coulometric titrations use electric current instead of measuring a liquid volume. Current is applied to drive an electrochemical reaction until it is complete. The charge needed for that reaction is then calculated to determine the amount or concentration of the reactant.

Most titrations stop when the analyte is used up at the endpoint, and this is called direct titration. If the reaction is too slow to give a sharp endpoint, back titration is used. In back titration, the analyte reacts with an excess of a standard solution, and the leftover amount is titrated with a second standard solution.

Sometimes neither direct titration nor back titration works well because no suitable indicator is available. In that case, displacement titration can be used. The analyte displaces a reagent, usually from a complex, and the displaced reagent is then measured by titration.
