Target Cell Response to Hormones

Gli ormoni si legano ai recettori sulla superficie o all'interno di una cellula bersaglio e avviano varie risposte cellulari. 
Un modo in cui le cellule regolano questi effetti è alterando la quantità del recettore espresso nella cellula.
Alti livelli ormonali possono portare a un graduale declino del numero di recettori per un determinato ormone sulle cellule, un processo chiamato sottoregolazione.
Al contrario, quando i livelli ormonali sono bassi, le cellule possono produrre più di un determinato recettore per aumentare la sensibilità cellulare attraverso l'up-regolazione.
Gli ormoni possono anche interagire con altri tipi di ormoni per creare diverse risposte cellulari.
Alcuni ormoni sono permissivi, dove la presenza di un ormone permette a un altro di esercitare i suoi effetti. Ad esempio, l'epinefrina ha bisogno di ormoni tiroidei per stimolare efficacemente la lipolisi nelle cellule bersaglio.
Altri, come l'ormone follicolo-stimolante e il testosterone, agiscono sinergicamente per produrre una risposta amplificata, in questo caso la normale produzione di spermatozoi.

Gli ormoni si legano in modo complesso ai recettori sulla superficie o all’interno delle cellule bersaglio, dando inizio a una cascata di risposte cellulari.

In particolare, la risposta cellulare può essere regolata alterando il numero di recettori espressi nella cellula. Ad esempio, l’esposizione prolungata a livelli ormonali elevati provoca un graduale declino o una sottoregolazione del numero di recettori per quello specifico ormone sulla superficie cellulare. Al contrario, come risposta ai bassi livelli ormonali, le cellule possono utilizzare una sovra-regolazione, producendo una maggiore quantità di un particolare recettore per migliorare la sensibilità cellulare.

L’interazione tra gli ormoni può portare a diverse risposte cellulari. Alcuni ormoni mostrano interazioni permissive, dove la presenza di un ormone consente ad un altro di esercitare i suoi effetti in modo sinergico. Un esempio è la collaborazione tra epinefrina e ormoni tiroidei, dove gli ormoni tiroidei facilitano l’efficace stimolazione della lipolisi da parte dell’epinefrina nelle cellule bersaglio. Inoltre, ormoni come l’ormone follicolo-stimolante e il testosterone dimostrano un’azione sinergica, lavorando di concerto per suscitare una risposta amplificata, come la normale produzione di sperma. Al contrario, alcuni ormoni instaurano relazioni antagoniste, dando luogo a risposte cellulari opposte. Un esempio classico è l’interazione tra insulina e glucagone, dove l’insulina stimola una diminuzione dei livelli di glucosio nel sangue mentre il glucagone agisce per aumentarli. Questa intricata rete di interazioni sottolinea la natura dinamica della regolazione ormonale e la sua profonda influenza sulla fisiologia cellulare.

Hormones trigger cell responses by binding to receptors on the cell surface or inside the target cell. This binding starts a chain of events that changes how the cell behaves. The response depends on the hormone, the receptor, and the type of target cell.

Cells can also change how strongly they respond by adjusting receptor numbers. When a cell is exposed to high hormone levels for a long time, it may down-regulate receptors. Down-regulation means the cell makes fewer receptors for that hormone on its surface. When hormone levels are low, cells may up-regulate receptors instead. Up-regulation means the cell makes more receptors so it becomes more sensitive.

Hormones can also work together in different ways. In a permissive interaction, one hormone must be present so another hormone can work well. Thyroid hormones help epinephrine stimulate lipolysis, which is the breakdown of fat, in target cells. In a synergistic response, two hormones act together and create a larger effect. Follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone do this during normal sperm production.

Some hormones have antagonistic effects, which means they act in opposite ways. Insulin lowers blood glucose, while glucagon raises it. These hormone interactions show how the body fine-tunes cell activity and keeps physiological processes in balance.

The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS).
