Bassi livelli ematici degli ormoni tiroidei – triiodotironina o T3 e tiroxina o T4 – segnalano all'ipotalamo di rilasciare l'ormone di rilascio della tireotropina o TRH.
Il TRH raggiunge quindi la ghiandola pituitaria e stimola il rilascio dell'ormone stimolante la tiroide o TSH nel flusso sanguigno.
Una volta raggiunta la ghiandola tiroidea, il TSH stimola l'assorbimento attivo degli ioni ioduro dal sangue da parte delle cellule follicolari.
Gli ioni si diffondono sulla superficie apicale delle cellule e vengono ossidati a iodio. Lo iodio viene quindi aggiunto ai residui di tirosina della proteina tireoglobulina immagazzinata nel colloide del lume, formando monoiodotirosina o T1 e diiodottirosina o T2.
L'accoppiamento di una molecola di T1 con T2 forma una molecola di T3, mentre due molecole di T2 si combinano insieme per formare T4.
Infine, l'endocitosi e la scissione enzimatica rilasciano il T3 e il T4 nelle cellule follicolari. Questi ormoni attraversano quindi il vaso sanguigno per il trasporto ai tessuti bersaglio.
Un aumento dei livelli ematici di T3 e T4 inibisce temporaneamente la produzione di TRH e TSH, regolando il livello di ormoni tiroidei nell'organismo.

Thyroid hormones T3 and T4 are made through a step-by-step process in the thyroid gland. Their release is also controlled by a feedback loop that helps keep hormone levels balanced in the body.

When blood levels of T3 and T4 drop, the hypothalamus responds by releasing thyrotropin-releasing hormone, or TRH. TRH travels to the pituitary gland and stimulates it to release thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH, into the bloodstream.

TSH then acts on the thyroid gland. It stimulates the follicular cells to actively take up iodide ions from the blood. The ions move to the apical surface of the cells, where they are oxidized to iodine.

The iodine is added to tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, a protein stored in the colloid of the follicle lumen. This forms monoiodotyrosine, or T1, and diiodotyrosine, or T2. One T1 joined with one T2 forms T3, while two T2 molecules combine to make T4.

After that, endocytosis and enzymatic cleavage release T3 and T4 inside the follicular cells. The hormones then enter the blood vessels and travel to target tissues. When blood levels of T3 and T4 rise, they temporarily inhibit TRH and TSH production, which helps regulate thyroid hormone levels.

The primary functions of the nervous system are sensation, integration and response. A comparison of the structures and functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems should be explored. The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS).
