Tali circuiti, in cui i parametri del circuito rimangono coerenti nonostante le variazioni di tensione o corrente, sono chiamati circuiti lineari.
I circuiti lineari sono composti da elementi lineari o sorgenti lineari indipendenti e soddisfano le proprietà di omogeneità e additività.
Questo principio può aiutare nella modellazione dei circuiti a prevedere la corrente della sorgente quando la caduta di tensione attraverso il carico cambia.
Inizialmente, vengono determinate la corrente attraverso il resistore di carico e la caduta di tensione attraverso il resistore superiore.
Successivamente, si ottiene la caduta di tensione attraverso il ramo centrale, che viene utilizzata per calcolare la corrente attraverso quel ramo. L'applicazione di KCL fornisce la corrente totale della sorgente.
Quando la tensione di carico cambia, la nuova corrente della sorgente può essere trovata moltiplicando una costante con la vecchia corrente e sostituendo i valori noti.
Tuttavia, il principio di linearità non si applica al calcolo della potenza, poiché la potenza ha una dipendenza quadrata dalla corrente.

Un circuito lineare è caratterizzato dal fatto che la sua uscita ha una proporzionalità diretta al suo ingresso, aderendo alla proprietà di linearità, che comprende i principi di omogeneità (scaling) e additività. L'omogeneità impone che quando l'input, noto anche come eccitazione, viene moltiplicato per un fattore costante, l'output, noto come risposta, viene corrispondentemente ridimensionato in base allo stesso fattore costante. Ad esempio, se la corrente viene moltiplicata per una costante "k", anche la tensione subisce un aumento di "k" volte.

La proprietà di additività stabilisce che la risposta a una somma di input è uguale alla somma delle risposte a ciascun singolo input applicato separatamente. In sostanza, questa proprietà fa sì che il comportamento del circuito rimanga coerente anche quando vengono combinati più ingressi.

In particolare, un resistore è classificato come un elemento lineare perché soddisfa sia le proprietà di omogeneità che di additività all'interno della sua relazione tensione-corrente. In generale, un circuito è considerato lineare se e solo se presenta caratteristiche sia di additività che di omogeneità. Tali circuiti lineari comprendono esclusivamente elementi lineari, sorgenti lineari dipendenti e sorgenti indipendenti.

Al contrario, l'espressione della potenza, che è definita come il rapporto tra il quadrato della tensione e della resistenza, costituisce una funzione quadratica e, pertanto, rientra nella categoria della non linearità nel contesto dell'analisi dei circuiti.

Linear Circuits

Circuit linearity describes how a circuit responds when its input changes. A linear circuit has an output that is directly proportional to its input. This behavior follows two rules: homogeneity and additivity.

Homogeneity means that if the input, or excitation, is multiplied by a constant factor, the response is multiplied by the same factor. For example, if the current is increased by a constant k, the voltage also increases by k times. Additivity means that the response to a sum of inputs equals the sum of the responses to each input applied separately.

A resistor is a linear element because its voltage-current relationship follows both homogeneity and additivity. A circuit is considered linear only when it has both properties. Linear circuits contain linear elements, linear dependent sources, and independent sources.

Power does not follow the same pattern. Its expression uses the square of voltage divided by resistance, so it is a quadratic function. That makes power a nonlinearity in circuit analysis.
