Utilizzando calibri semplici, la forma dell'aggregato grossolano può essere identificata come allungata se la sua lunghezza è considerevolmente maggiore di altre dimensioni, a scaglie se il suo spessore è inferiore rispetto alle altre dimensioni, o sia allungata che a scaglie.
La struttura superficiale dell'aggregato grossolano è generalmente classificata come ruvida o liscia in base alla consistenza del suo materiale di base e alla misura in cui le forze agiscono su di esso.
Le rocce appena frantumate sono angolari con angoli acuti e una consistenza ruvida. Nel tempo, a causa degli agenti atmosferici, gli angoli si rompono, formando particelle subangolari.
Inoltre, poiché queste particelle vengono trasportate dagli agenti atmosferici, i loro angoli si consumano, dando luogo a particelle arrotondate con una consistenza liscia.

Rounded aggregates are fully shaped by attrition, which means they have been worn down by rubbing and impact. River gravel and seashore gravel are common examples.
