Aggregate specific gravity depends on the pores inside the material. These pores may be permeable or impermeable, so the same aggregate can be described in more than one way. For this reason, specific gravity is grouped into bulk or gross specific gravity, apparent specific gravity, and absolute specific gravity.

Bulk or gross specific gravity uses the mass of aggregate in the saturated surface-dry state. It is compared with the total volume of the aggregate, including both the solids and the voids inside it. Apparent specific gravity uses the dry mass of the aggregate and the volume of the aggregate, but it counts only the impermeable voids.

Absolute specific gravity is based on the dry mass of the aggregate and the volume of the aggregate with all voids removed from the calculation. When concrete mixtures are prepared, finding the true specific gravity is not essential. Natural aggregates are porous, so the total volume they occupy, including internal pores, matters more.

That is why apparent specific gravity is important in practice. For most common rocks, it usually ranges from 2.60 to 2.70. Typical values are about 2.69 for granite, 2.65 for sandstone, and 2.60 for dense limestone.
