La sabbia naturale può contenere impurità organiche, come la materia vegetativa decomposta, che interferiscono con l'idratazione del cemento.
Viene condotto un test colorimetrico per rilevare la presenza di materia organica, che può essere giudicata dal colore della soluzione contenente l'aggregato. Più scura è la soluzione, maggiore è la materia organica in essa contenuta.
Le impurità fini, come argilla, limo e polvere di frantumazione, ottenute dalla frantumazione delle pietre, rivestono gli inerti e provocano una scarsa adesione con la pasta cementizia.
Inoltre, la presenza di impurità fini aumenta la superficie da bagnare e quindi richiede più acqua per la miscelazione, il posizionamento e la finitura. Questa acqua in eccesso aumenta il ritiro da essiccazione e la probabilità di fessurazioni.
Il metodo del setaccio a umido viene utilizzato per determinare la presenza di impurità fini negli aggregati grossolani. 
L'eccesso di sale negli aggregati fini porta alla corrosione delle armature in acciaio e assorbe l'umidità dall'aria, causando efflorescenze nel calcestruzzo.
La presenza di materiali a bassa densità, come lo scisto, e inclusioni morbide in aggregati come grumi di argilla, carbone o legno possono rompersi sotto i carichi, causando vaiolatura e fuoriuscita nel calcestruzzo.

Le sostanze deleterie negli aggregati possono essere dannose per la qualità e la durata del calcestruzzo. Queste sostanze includono impurità organiche come il terriccio, che interferiscono con l'idratazione del cemento e sono solitamente presenti nella sabbia. Queste impediscono un buon legame tra aggregato e pasta di cemento. Le impurità organiche possono essere rilevate utilizzando il test colorimetrico, in cui l'oscurità di una soluzione dopo l'agitazione indica il livello di contenuto organico.


 Un altro tipo di impurità è l'argilla o della materia fine che può ricoprire le particelle di aggregato indebolendo il legame con la pasta di cemento. La presenza di argilla e di limo nell'aggregato viene spesso valutata utilizzando metodi di sedimentazione o setaccio umido. Anche i sali provenienti da ambienti marini sono considerati sostanze deleterie, in particolare se presenti in quantità superiori al 6% in massa, poiché portano alla corrosione dei rinforzi incorporati nel calcestruzzo. Per ridurre il contenuto di sale, si consiglia di lavare gli aggregati con acqua dolce.


 Infine, gli aggregati contenenti particelle come scisto, carbone o mica, i quali non sono durevoli o assorbono acqua, possono portare al degrado del calcestruzzo. Le norme europee EN, e in Italia le norme UNI, stabiliscono i livelli ammissibili per queste particelle deleterie negli aggregati. Test adeguati e l'aderenza agli standard sono fondamentali per garantire la qualità degli aggregati utilizzati nelle costruzioni, salvaguardando così l'integrità e la durabilità delle strutture in calcestruzzo.
