Durante il processo di stagionatura, l'acqua può evaporare o partecipare a reazioni chimiche, aumentando la temperatura e riducendo la lavorabilità.  In termini di distribuzione degli aggregati, anche l'uso di aggregati semi-leggeri al posto di quelli standard può influire sulla lavorabilità. Questi aggregati hanno un peso specifico inferiore, che li porta a occupare più volume, riducendo così la lavorabilità. Infine, l'aerazione è una tecnica che incorpora piccole bolle d'aria nel calcestruzzo, riducendo l'acqua necessaria per ottenere la lavorabilità desiderata e contribuendo a migliorare le prestazioni e la durata complessive della miscela.

Concrete workability depends on mix design factors that change how easily the material can be mixed, handled, and finished. The mix needs enough flow so it can move and be placed without losing quality. Water is a key part of this because it acts as a lubricant between the ingredients.

The amount of water needed can change with the aggregates, or the solid particles in the mix. Finer particles and angular, rough-textured aggregates need more water than smooth, rounded ones because they have more surface area and resist movement. Porous aggregates also absorb water, which leaves less water available to lubricate the mix and lowers workability.

Workability can also drop during curing, the hardening stage of concrete. Water may evaporate or be used in chemical reactions, and the temperature can rise. Both changes can make the mix less workable over time.
