I protisti sono microrganismi eucarioti unicellulari, coloniali o multicellulari che si trovano in vari ambienti acquatici e umidi. Protists are diverse eukaryotic microorganisms with many ways to move, eat, and survive. They do not have the specialized tissues of plants and animals or the chitinous cell walls of fungi. Their early split within Eukarya led to major structural, functional, and ecological diversity.

Scientists group protists into supergroups based on genetic analysis and shared structures. These groups include Archaeplastida, Excavata, Amoebozoa, Rhizaria, Alveolata, and Stramenopiles. This classification helps explain how different protists are related.

Protists also show many movement adaptations. Paramecium uses cilia, which are short hair-like structures. Giardia uses flagella, and Amoeba moves with pseudopodia, or temporary extensions of the cell. Freshwater protists often use contractile vacuoles to control water balance.

Some protists have special structures that support survival. Dinoflagellates have thecal plates that help with protection and buoyancy. Diatoms have silica-based cell walls. These walls can help with defense against predators and with carbon sequestration.

Protists have several modes of nutrition. Autotrophic protists, such as algae, make their own food by photosynthesis and act as primary producers. Heterotrophic protists, including protozoa, take in or absorb organic matter. Mixotrophs, such as Euglena, can switch between photosynthesis and heterotrophy depending on light or nutrient levels.

Protists reproduce in both asexual and sexual ways. Asexual reproduction can happen by binary fission, budding, or multiple fission. Sexual reproduction occurs in Paramecium through conjugation, when cells exchange genetic material before dividing. Some protists, such as Laminaria, also show alternation of generations, with haploid and diploid stages.

The evolution of protists is closely tied to endosymbiotic theory. Early eukaryotes engulfed bacteria about 1.5 to 2 billion years ago, which led to the origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts. Mitochondria came from an ancestral proteobacterium through primary endosymbiosis, and chloroplasts came from cyanobacteria. Secondary endosymbiosis later allowed other eukaryotes to gain chloroplasts.

Protists are important in ecosystems and in medicine. Photosynthetic protists produce oxygen and store carbon, while decomposers recycle organic matter. They are also food for larger organisms and help sustain aquatic food webs. Some protists live in mutualistic relationships, such as those that aid termite digestion, while others cause disease. Plasmodium, spread by Anopheles mosquitoes, causes malaria. Trypanosoma causes African sleeping sickness, and Giardia causes gastrointestinal infections. Microalgae are also being studied for biofuel production and carbon capture.
