Dopc Lipid Film

A DOPC lipid film is a thin layer of dioleoylphosphatidylcholine, a phospholipid used to create controlled model membranes for biochemical studies. Its amphiphilic molecules contain hydrophilic phosphate headgroups and hydrophobic oleoyl chains; after solvent evaporation and hydration, they self-assemble into bilayer structures whose fluidity supports membrane-like behavior. Researchers use DOPC films to prepare liposomes or supported lipid bilayers, investigate membrane protein interactions, and control lipid composition in assays involving transport, signaling, and surface chemistry. This makes the film a practical starting material for reproducible membrane models in biochemistry.

We demonstrate a storable, transportable lipid bilayer formation system. A lipid bilayer membrane can be formed within 1 hr with over 80% success rate when a frozen membrane precursor is brought to ambient temperature. This system will reduce laborious processes and expertise associated with ion channels.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...
