Fibrinogen Assay

A fibrinogen assay is a laboratory test that measures the concentration or functional activity of fibrinogen, a soluble plasma protein essential for forming blood clots. In the Clauss method, diluted plasma is exposed to a high concentration of thrombin, and the time required to form a fibrin clot is compared with a calibration standard; shorter clotting times generally indicate higher functional fibrinogen levels. In bioengineering, fibrinogen assays help characterize blood-contacting materials, fibrin-based hydrogels, tissue-engineering scaffolds, and engineered coagulation systems. The measurements support evaluation of clot formation, material hemocompatibility, and consistency in biologically derived or synthetic constructs.

Invasion Assay Using 3D Matrices

2023

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of molecules that provide a structural framework for cells and tissues and helps facilitate intercellular communication. Three-dimensional cell culture techniques have been developed to more accurately model this extracellular environment for in vitro study. While many cell processes during migration through 3D matrices are similar to those required for movement across rigid 2D surfaces, including adherence, migration through ECM also requires cells...

Cancer cells are embedded in a collagen gel and then sandwiched in an acellular fibrin gel to generate a 3D culture system in which the invasiveness and formation of satellite tumors may be monitored.

Thrombus Profiling Assay: A Microfluidics-Based Platform for Comprehensively Characterizing Biomechanical Thrombogenesis

2026

This work describes a microfluidic assay that uses shear stress to trigger thrombus formation in blood and characterizes the thrombus by multiple dimensions of readout. The assay can measure the prothrombotic tendency of blood samples, and is thus useful in disease diagnosis, drug discovery, as well as basic mechanistic studies related to thrombosis.
