Hydrophobic Copolymer

A hydrophobic copolymer is a polymer made from two or more chemically distinct repeating units, including segments that have low affinity for water. Its nonpolar regions minimize contact with aqueous environments, often driving phase separation, micelle formation, or self-assembly when the material is placed in water or a biological fluid. In bioengineering, these polymers can help form membranes, coatings, nanoparticles, and scaffolds with tunable surface properties and stability. By adjusting block composition, chain length, and hydrophobicity, researchers can control interactions with proteins and cells, enabling applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and the design of biomimetic materials.

2016

The key steps of living anionic polymerization of phenyl glycidyl ether (PheGE) on methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-b-PPheGE) are described. The resulting block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were loaded with doxorubicin 14% (wt%) and sustained release of drug over 4 days under physiologically relevant conditions was obtained.

Synthesis of Ligand-free CdS Nanoparticles within a Sulfur Copolymer Matrix

Herein we present a method to synthesize ligand-free cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles based on a unique sulfur copolymer. The sulfur copolymer operates as a high temperature solvent and a sulfur source during the nanoparticle synthesis and stabilizes the nanoparticles after the reaction.

Solid-state Graft Copolymer Electrolytes for Lithium Battery Applications

2013

Lithium ion batteries employ flammable and volatile organic electrolytes that are suitable for ambient temperature applications. A safer alternative to organic electrolytes are solid polymer batteries. Solid polymer batteries operate safely at high temperatures (>120 °C), thus making them applicable to high temperature applications such as deep oil drilling and hybrid electric vehicles. This paper will discuss (a) the polymer synthesis, (b) the polymer conduction mechanism, and (c) provide...

Calcium-Dependent Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography: A Technique to Purify Calcium-Binding Proteins Based on Hydrophobic Interactions

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the purification of calcium-binding protein from a dialyzed cell lysate through calcium-dependent hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The calcium-binding proteins expose a hydrophobic region upon binding with calcium, facilitating interaction with a hydrophobic group on resin. Later these proteins are eluted using calcium chelator EDTA that reverses the interaction.
