Secondary Cell Seeding

Secondary cell seeding is a bioengineering technique in which cells from an established culture are transferred onto a new culture surface, scaffold, or biomaterial to initiate a subsequent growth phase. After cells are detached from the original substrate, they are collected, counted, and distributed at a controlled density so they can reattach, spread, and proliferate under defined culture conditions. This process supports the expansion and maintenance of engineered cell populations, enables cell–material interaction studies, and helps populate three-dimensional constructs for tissue engineering. Consistent seeding density and cell distribution improve reproducibility when evaluating scaffold performance, cellular organization, and tissue formation.

This video describes the technique of seeding mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) onto a biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) scaffold. The prepared scaffolds can be implanted into the surgical resection cavity of the brain from where they may migrate towards tumor foci. Further, these cells can be engineered to express therapeutic proteins to stimulate apoptosis in cancer cells.

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte

2020

Seed structures are composed of a protective seed coat surrounding a plant embryo, and a food store for the developing embryo. The embryo contains the precursor tissues for leaves, stem, and roots. The endosperm and cotyledons—seed leaves—act as the food reserves for the growing embryo. The embryo contains a double set of chromosomes, one set from each parent. Fertilization of the haploid egg by the haploid sperm gives rise to the zygote, which develops into the embryo. The endosperm is a...

Plant cell wall composition varies between tissue types and can include lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses, and pectin. Various staining techniques have been developed to visualize differences at the cell-type level. This paper is a compilation of commonly used cell wall staining techniques.

Secondary Healthcare System

Secondary healthcare is offered by a specialist, generally in hospitals or clinics for patients referred by primary healthcare providers. It occurs when a person has an illness or injury that requires specific medical care. Secondary care is often referred to as acute care. Secondary care can range from uncomplicated care to repair a minor laceration or treat a strep throat infection to more complicated emergent care, such as treating a head injury sustained in an automobile accident. Whatever...
