Behavioral Phenotyping

Behavioral phenotyping is the systematic measurement and analysis of an organism’s behavior to characterize its observable traits and biological function. Researchers use standardized behavioral assays, direct observation, video tracking, and quantitative analysis to measure features such as locomotion, social interaction, learning, sensory responses, and activity under defined conditions. In biology, these profiles help link genetic or environmental changes to neural and physiological mechanisms, identify disease-related behavioral alterations, and evaluate responses to potential treatments. Behavioral phenotyping is therefore an important bridge between molecular changes and whole-organism outcomes, particularly in studies using model organisms.

2026

This protocol provides a framework for assessing stress-induced behavioral changes in Drosophila melanogaster. Combining complementary assays enables the quantification of activity, exploration, and decision-making for individual flies. The approach is flexible and can be adapted to a wide range of studies investigating stress biology, metabolism, and neurobehavioral function.

Life in a Population Organisms in populations interact with one another in complex ways, where individuals compete for resources such as food, shelter, and mates. These interactions are costly since individuals invest energy to acquire the resource, therefore there are a variety of strategies that organisms adopt to gain an advantage over their competitors. This is observed clearly with polymorphic mating systems, in which one sex, predominantly males, display multiple mating strategies. For...

Quantification of Drosophila melanogaster Grooming Behavior for Evaluation of Excessive Grooming Phenotypes

2025

The method presented here involves the manual annotation of footage acquired of Drosophila melanogaster for specific grooming behaviors. It allows for quantification of both the number of grooming bouts and overall time spent grooming to evaluate for atypical self-grooming phenotypes.
