Spodoptera Litura

Spodoptera litura is a noctuid moth species whose larvae are highly polyphagous agricultural pests, making it important in insect biology, crop protection, and applied research. Its life cycle progresses through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, with feeding damage caused primarily by caterpillars that consume leaves and may reduce plant growth and yield. Studies of S. litura examine host-plant interactions, larval development, reproductive biology, and responses to insecticides. This research supports integrated pest management, including biological control, monitoring, and evaluation of resistance, while also providing a model for investigating herbivory and insect adaptation.

Aluminum foil was microsurgically inserted between the testes of Spodoptera litura to obstruct the fusion of testis. The procedure includes freezing, fixing, disinfection, incision, placing the barrier, suturing, postoperative feeding, and inspection. This approach provides a method to interfere with tissue formation.

The active bacterial community associated with the gut of Spodoptera littoralis, was determined by stable-isotope-probing (SIP) coupled to pyrosequencing. Using this methodology, identification of the metabolically active bacteria species within the community was done with high resolution and precision.

Generation of Chikungunya Virus-Like Particles Using Baculovirus Expression System in Insect Cells

2025

This video shows how virus-like particles, VLPs are generated by infecting insect cells with a recombinant baculovirus carrying the chikungunya virus gene cassette. The recombinant virus infects cells, leading to VLP formation, assembly, and release into the culture medium for potential use in vaccine production.
