Vertebral Bone Loss

Vertebral bone loss is the reduction of mineralized bone, particularly the trabecular bone within vertebral bodies, and is an important feature of skeletal weakening and osteoporosis. It develops when bone resorption by osteoclasts outpaces new bone formation by osteoblasts, altering bone remodeling and reducing vertebral strength. In biology and medicine, studying this process helps explain vertebral compression fractures, changes in spinal structure, and loss of mobility, while measurements of bone density and tissue architecture support risk assessment. Research on hormonal, nutritional, aging-related, and mechanical influences also informs strategies to preserve bone and evaluate therapies that restore skeletal integrity.

Line Loss

2024

The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss. Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Here, we have used alizarin red staining to show that lead acetate exposure causes a bone mass change in zebrafish larvae. This staining method can be adapted to the investigation of bone loss in zebrafish larvae loss induced by other hazardous toxicants.

Piping Networks and Pressure Losses

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...
