Annulene

Annulenes are monocyclic, fully conjugated hydrocarbons with alternating double bonds, classified by the number of carbon atoms in the ring and studied because their structures reveal how cyclic conjugation influences aromaticity. Their π electrons can delocalize around the ring when the molecule adopts a suitable planar geometry; systems with 4n + 2 π electrons may satisfy Hückel’s rule and show aromatic stabilization, whereas nonplanar rings may remain nonaromatic. Examples such as [6]annulene, commonly called benzene, and larger annulenes help chemists relate molecular structure to stability, reactivity, electronic properties, and the design of unusual aromatic materials.
