Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a phthalate ester and widely used plasticizer, a chemical additive that increases the flexibility and workability of polymers, especially polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Its two ester-linked 2-ethylhexyl groups interact weakly with polymer chains, increasing chain mobility and reducing intermolecular forces, which lowers the material’s glass-transition temperature without forming covalent bonds to the polymer. In chemistry and materials research, DEHP provides a model for studying additive–polymer interactions, migration from plastic products, and environmental and toxicological exposure, making its structure, physical behavior, and persistence important considerations in polymer design and chemical safety.
