Petroleum Refining

Petroleum refining is the chemical and physical processing of crude oil into fuels, lubricants, petrochemical feedstocks, and other useful products. Refineries first separate crude oil into fractions by boiling point through fractional distillation, then modify selected hydrocarbons using conversion processes such as catalytic cracking and reforming; treating steps remove sulfur, nitrogen, and other impurities. These operations adjust product composition and performance to meet specifications for gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and industrial materials. In chemistry, petroleum refining illustrates how molecular structure, catalysts, temperature, pressure, and separation principles work together to transform a complex natural mixture into standardized products essential to transportation, manufacturing, and energy systems.

Here, we present a protocol to isolate microglia from postnatal mouse pups (day 1) for in vitro experimentation. This improvised method of isolation generates both high yield and purity, a significant advantage over alternate methods that allows broad range experimentation for the purposes of elucidating microglial biology.

2024

Training protocols involving positive reinforcement for routine husbandry procedures in rabbits were developed and proved to be successful, as the rabbits reliably showed the trained behaviors at the weekly general examination. Picking the rabbits up with the transport box was less aversive than the conventional handling technique.
