Sers Hotspot

A SERS hotspot is a nanoscale region near a rough metal surface or closely spaced metallic nanoparticles where surface-enhanced Raman scattering produces exceptionally strong signal amplification. When light excites localized surface plasmon resonances, electromagnetic fields concentrate at sharp features and narrow gaps, greatly increasing the Raman response of molecules adsorbed nearby. In chemistry, these hotspots enable highly sensitive detection of trace analytes, including molecules present at very low concentrations, by providing distinctive vibrational fingerprints. Controlling nanoparticle size, shape, spacing, and surface chemistry helps improve hotspot uniformity and reproducibility, supporting chemical sensing, reaction monitoring, and the development of advanced analytical materials.
