Sonication-assisted Extraction

Sonication-assisted extraction is a sample-preparation technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to improve the recovery of chemical compounds from solid or liquid materials. As ultrasound travels through the extraction medium, it generates cavitation bubbles whose rapid formation and collapse produce localized turbulence, disrupt cellular or particle structures, and enhance solvent penetration and mass transfer. In chemistry, this approach can accelerate the isolation of natural products, pigments, pharmaceuticals, and other analytes while reducing extraction time and solvent use compared with conventional methods. Its effectiveness depends on factors such as solvent selection, sonication power, temperature, and treatment duration.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The material comprising the living "organic" share of any ecosystem (leaves, fungi, bark, tissue; Figure 1) differs fundamentally from the material of the non-living "inorganic" share (rocks and their constituent minerals, oxygen, water, metals). Organic material contains carbon linked to a series of other carbon and hydrogen molecules (Figure 2), which distinguishes it from inorganic material. Carbon's wide valency range...

Robot-assisted natural orifice specimen extraction surgery is a minimally invasive technique that combines robotic precision with natural orifice specimen extraction. A 67-year-old patient successfully underwent the procedure in 290 min, with minimal bleeding and no residual cancer. This approach minimized abdominal trauma, reduced complications, and enabled a quick recovery.

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...

Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction of Cannabidiolic Acid from Cannabis Biomass

Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) increases extraction efficiency of solvents and when applied to Cannabis spp. biomass it reduces the time required for extraction. This decreases the cost and potential cannabinoid loss due to degradation. Additionally, UAE is considered a green method due to low solvent use.
