Transition Metal Complexes

Transition metal complexes are compounds in which a metal ion or atom binds surrounding molecules or ions called ligands, producing distinctive structures and chemical properties. They form when ligand donor atoms coordinate to the metal through lone-pair donation, while metal d orbitals influence geometry, electronic transitions, magnetism, and reactivity. In chemistry, these complexes help explain color changes, catalysis, redox behavior, and molecular recognition, with properties shaped by metal identity, oxidation state, coordination number, and ligand field. Their study supports the design of catalysts, medicines, sensors, and materials, linking molecular structure to function in laboratory and industrial processes.

Properties of Transition Metals

Transition metals are defined as those elements that have partially filled d orbitals. As shown in Figure 1, the d-block elements in groups 3–12 are transition elements. The f-block elements, also called inner transition metals (the lanthanides and actinides), also meet this criterion because the d orbital is partially occupied before the f orbitals. Figure 1: Periodic Table. The transition metals are located in groups 3–11 of the periodic table. The inner transition metals are in the two rows...

2017

Reliable, intermediate scale preparation of 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*H) is presented. The revised protocol for the synthesis and purification of the ligand minimizes the need for specialized laboratory equipment while simplifying reaction workups and product purification. Use of Cp*H in the synthesis of [Cp*MCl2]2 complexes (M = Ru, Ir) is also described.
