Arterial Blood Gases

Arterial blood gases are laboratory measurements of arterial blood that assess oxygenation, ventilation, and acid–base balance, making them important for evaluating respiratory and metabolic disturbances. A blood sample, typically obtained from the radial artery, is analyzed for pH, partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and bicarbonate concentration; these values show how effectively the lungs exchange gases and how the body regulates blood acidity. Clinicians use arterial blood gases to identify hypoxemia, respiratory failure, and metabolic abnormalities, guide oxygen or ventilatory support, and monitor patients with conditions such as asthma, chronic lung disease, sepsis, or critical illness.

Noble Gases

The elements in group 18 are noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon). They earned the name “noble” because they were assumed to be nonreactive since they have filled valence shells. In 1962, Dr. Neil Bartlett at the University of British Columbia proved this assumption to be false. These elements are present in the atmosphere in small amounts. Some natural gas contains 1–2% helium by mass. Helium is isolated from natural gas by liquefying the condensable components,...

Molecular Comparison of Gases, Liquids, and Solids

Particles in a solid are tightly packed together (fixed shape) and often arranged in a regular pattern; in a liquid, they are close together with no regular arrangement (no fixed shape); in a gas, they are far apart with no regular arrangement (no fixed shape). Particles in a solid vibrate about fixed positions (cannot flow) and do not generally move in relation to one another; in a liquid, they move past each other (can flow) but remain in essentially constant contact; in a gas, they move...

Chronic catheterization of blood vessels in the rat is often required for administration of substances, obtain blood sample over a period of time or for direct conscious blood pressure measurements. Femoral arterial catheterization of the rat and corresponding measurements of blood pressure in the conscious animal will be demonstrated.

Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Assess Blood Flow in the Arteries of a Rat

Source: Chiu, S., et al. Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Rat Common Carotid Artery. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to measure blood flow in the common carotid artery of a rat. After securing an anesthetized rat on the MRI bed and ensuring stable physiological parameters, the common carotid artery is scanned to capture images at defined intervals. Blood flow is then computed from these images to evaluate changes...

Perfect Gases and the First Law

A perfect gas obeys the equation of state pV = nRT. The internal energy of a perfect gas remains unaffected by volume alterations. Therefore, the internal energy of a perfect gas is solely dependent on temperature.Consider an ideal gas enclosed in a cylinder situated within a substantial constant-temperature bath. In an isothermal process, where the temperature remains constant, the change in internal energy equates to zero. Thus, according to the first law of thermodynamics, heat absorbed (q)...
