Gag Reflex Evaluation

Gag reflex evaluation is a clinical assessment of the pharyngeal response to stimulation and can provide information about swallowing-related cranial nerve function. Light contact with the posterior pharyngeal wall activates sensory pathways carried mainly by the glossopharyngeal nerve, while motor output through the vagus nerve produces elevation and contraction of the palate and pharyngeal muscles. Clinicians compare responses between sides and interpret absent, reduced, or asymmetric reactions alongside voice, cough, and swallowing findings. The assessment supports evaluation of dysphagia, brainstem disorders, and lower cranial nerve dysfunction, although the reflex alone does not reliably predict aspiration risk or overall swallowing safety.

We illustrate here an in vitro membrane binding assay in which interactions between HIV-1 Gag and lipid membranes are visually analyzed using YFP-tagged Gag synthesized in a wheat germ-based in vitro translation system and GUVs prepared by an electroformation technique.

Neurodevelopmental Reflex Testing in Neonatal Rat Pups

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Reflex Activity

2024

A reflex activity is an automatic, involuntary response to specific stimuli. It is a part of our survival mechanism, designed to protect us from potential harm. For example, when a bright light suddenly shines into our eyes, we instinctively close them or look away. This is a simple reflex activity orchestrated by the nervous system without conscious thought or effort. A reflex exam is a diagnostic procedure performed by a healthcare professional to evaluate the functionality of a patient's...

The Micturition Reflex

2024

Urination, or micturition involves the coordination of the bladder's detrusor muscle and two sphincters to ensure controlled bladder emptying. The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating urine...

Early Reflexes During Infancy

Early reflexes are automatic, involuntary responses to specific stimuli and provide information about neurological development during infancy. Some reflexes are present at birth or appear soon afterward. Known as primitive reflexes, they support early survival and adaptation.Primitive ReflexesPrimitive reflexes help newborns respond to their environment before voluntary motor control develops. The rooting reflex causes an infant to turn toward stimulation near the mouth, helping the infant...
