Health Belief Model

The Health Belief Model is a behavioral framework that explains how people’s perceptions of illness and treatment influence health-related decisions. It proposes that individuals are more likely to adopt a clinical behavior when they perceive personal susceptibility and serious consequences, believe the action offers benefits, and face manageable barriers; cues to action and self-efficacy can further support change. Clinicians and researchers use the model to understand prevention, screening, medication adherence, and other health behaviors. Applying its constructs can guide patient education and interventions that address misconceptions, strengthen confidence, and improve engagement with recommended care.
