Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is the use of noninvasive techniques to produce images of internal body structures and functions, supporting clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. Different modalities generate contrast through distinct physical principles: X-rays measure tissue-dependent radiation attenuation, ultrasound detects reflected sound waves, magnetic resonance imaging maps signals from nuclei in a magnetic field, and nuclear imaging tracks radiolabeled compounds. These methods help clinicians identify disease, assess injury, monitor treatment response, and guide procedures. Selecting an imaging technique requires balancing diagnostic information, image resolution, acquisition time, patient condition, and potential risks such as radiation exposure.

Diagnostic ultrasound imaging has proven to be effective in diagnosing various respiratory diseases in human and animal subjects. We demonstrate a comprehensive ultrasound protocol utilized by Dr. Zuo's lab to analyze diaphragm kinetics specifically in mouse models. This is also a non-invasive research technique which can provide quantitative information on mouse respiratory muscle function.

Magnetic Levitation Coupled with Portable Imaging and Analysis for Disease Diagnostics

We present a magnetic levitation technique coupled with automated imaging and analysis in both a smartphone-compatible device and a device with embedded imaging and processing. This is applied to measure the density distribution of cells with two demonstrated biomedical applications: sickle cell disease diagnosis and separating white and red blood cells.

2026

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) serves as the primary classification system for mental health disorders, providing standardized diagnostic criteria for clinicians and researchers. First published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, the DSM has undergone several revisions to reflect evolving psychiatric understanding. The fifth edition, DSM-5, was published in 2013, followed by its text revision, DSM-5-TR, in 2022. This revision incorporates...
