Muscle Tone Assessment

Muscle tone assessment is a clinical evaluation of the resistance a muscle offers during passive movement, helping identify abnormalities in nervous system function. Clinicians assess tone by observing posture and gently moving relaxed limbs through their range of motion, noting changes in resistance that may indicate spasticity, rigidity, or hypotonia. Findings support neurological examination and help distinguish patterns associated with conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and peripheral neuromuscular disorders. Consistent assessment can guide diagnosis, monitor disease progression, evaluate treatment response, and inform rehabilitation planning.

We have developed a device (Twister) to study the regulation of tonic muscle activity during active postural maintenance. Twister measures torsional resistance and muscular responses in standing subjects during twisting of the body axis. The device can be flexibly configured to study various aspects of tonic control across the neck, trunk, and/or hips.

Alterations in Muscle Tone ll

2026

Alterations in muscle tone are common manifestations of neurological disorders and reflect dysfunction within different nervous system regions. Spasticity, paratonia, and dystonia represent distinct forms of hypertonia, each with unique mechanisms, clinical features, and diagnostic importance.CharacteristicsSpasticity happens from upper motor neuron lesions and is characterized by velocity-dependent resistance to passive movement. Clinical features include:Exaggerated deep tendon reflexesClonus...

Rigidity and myotonia are distinct abnormalities of muscle tone that affect resistance and relaxation during movement. Although both involve altered muscle contraction, they arise from different neurological and muscular mechanisms.CharacteristicsRigidity is characterized by uniform resistance to passive movement across the entire range, independent of speed, affecting flexors and extensors equally. It may appear as lead-pipe rigidity (smooth, constant resistance) or cogwheel rigidity...

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

Assessing Muscle Contraction with Neuromuscular Blocker Treatment

This video demonstrates assessing the muscle using cultured motor neurons, Schwann cells, and myotubes, followed by treatment with a neuromuscular blocker to inhibit contraction. Color-coded time-motion graphics show a color-coded time-motion graphic. Red indicates the fastest movement, and blue indicates the slowest.
