Nose Examination

Nose examination is a structured clinical assessment of the external nose and nasal cavity used to evaluate airflow, mucosal health, and signs of disease. Clinicians inspect the nose for symmetry, swelling, skin changes, discharge, or deformity, then assess the nasal passages and septum with light and an otoscope or nasal speculum; gentle palpation can identify tenderness or structural abnormalities. Findings may indicate conditions such as rhinitis, sinus disease, nasal obstruction, trauma, infection, or septal deviation. As a rapid, noninvasive component of the clinical examination, it guides further testing, treatment decisions, and referral to specialists when needed.

A rapid method for volatile compound analysis in fruit is described. The volatile compounds present in the headspace of a homogenate of the sample are rapidly separated and detected with ultra-fast gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor. A procedure for data handling and analysis is also discussed.

The nose is composed of an observable exterior segment (external nose) and an internal segment within the skull known as the nasal cavity (internal nose). The external nose, visible on the face, consists of a framework of bone and hyaline cartilage enveloped in skin and muscle and lined with a mucous membrane. This structure is supported by the frontal bone, nasal bones, and maxillary bone and is supplemented by a cartilaginous framework comprising the septal nasal cartilage, lateral nasal...

They are also tasked with identifying congenital anomalies that require early intervention to promote a long and healthy life for the child. Many newborn anomalies, such as heart defects, are noted on prenatal ultrasound. However,...

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA The simplest ophthalmoscopes consist of an aperture to look through, a diopter indicator, and a disc for selecting lenses. The ophthalmoscope is primarily used to examine the fundus, or the inner wall of the posterior eye, which consists of the choroid, retina, fovea, macula, optic disc, and retinal vessels (Figure 1). The spherical eyeball...
