Renal Manifestations

Renal manifestations are the signs, symptoms, and laboratory abnormalities that indicate kidney involvement in disease, making them important for diagnosis, staging, and patient management. They arise when conditions such as immune-mediated injury, altered renal blood flow, glomerular damage, or tubular dysfunction disrupt filtration, fluid and electrolyte regulation, or waste excretion. Clinicians evaluate findings including proteinuria, hematuria, edema, changes in urine output, and increased serum creatinine to identify the underlying process and assess severity. Recognizing these patterns supports early treatment, monitoring of disease progression, and prevention of complications such as chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury.

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.
