Work Environment Safety

Work environment safety is the systematic prevention of hazards that could harm people, property, or operations, and it is essential for reliable clinical care. In clinical settings, teams identify biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks, assess their likelihood and severity, and apply controls such as engineering safeguards, safe work procedures, personal protective equipment, training, and incident reporting. These measures reduce exposure to infectious agents, sharps injuries, hazardous substances, and other workplace threats while supporting patient safety and staff well-being. Effective safety programs also strengthen regulatory compliance, encourage a reporting culture, and provide data for continuous improvement in hospitals, laboratories, and other healthcare environments.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Electric machines and power electronics experiments involve electrical currents, voltages, power, and energy quantities that should be handled with extreme diligence and care. These may include three-phase AC voltage (208 V, 230 V, or 480 V), up to 250 V DC voltages, and currents that can reach 10 A. Electrocution occurs when an electrical path is established through the body with very low currents...

Surveying near highways, rough terrain, or power lines involves significant risks. Working along highways is particularly dangerous and requires the use of warning signs and flagmen. It is safest to avoid working directly on roads and use offsets whenever possible. When highway work is unavoidable, it must follow all safety guidelines. Surveyors should wear bright clothing, such as orange reflective vests, to ensure visibility to motorists, coworkers, and hunters. In construction zones, wearing...
